(I don’t follow MMA, or Ultimate Fighting, much.  Although the referees generally break things up pretty quickly, it’s a little too much like street fighting for my taste.  I’m a much bigger fan of traditional boxing.  The rules seem more clear, and civilized, and the fights have more of an aspect of a chess match, than the frenetic abstract violence of MMA.  But, last week’s upset victory of Holly Holm over the unstoppable champ, Ronda Rousey, did remind me of one classic boxing match from 25 years ago.  A totally arrogant, and classless “champ” completely ignored the dignitaries in the ring, and then showed absolutely no respect to his challenger.  Then he was totally dominated by the 7th ranked challenger, and eventually lost his heavyweight title . . . to James “Buster” Douglas.  After that fight, Mike Tyson was never quite the same boxer again.

There were no new clue words today, but all of the jumbles came up as new.  Surprisingly, “dugele” gave me the most challenge, despite the jumble starting and ending with the same letters as the un-jumbled word.  I thought they were all great jumbles.  The answer letter layout was also a great jumble.  It gave away nothing.  At first I was thinking the answer was going to be LOSE WITH the . . . , but I couldn’t do anything with HNRLUCP.  Not enough vowels.  But, there was enough there for me to recognize PUNCHES, so I was able to come up with ROLL.  I always enjoy Jeff’s boxing cartoons.  Kind of reminiscent of the occasional boxers from the Grin and Bear It comics.  Kind of ironic how the two sports known as The Sport of Kings, boxing and horse racing, are both viewed as secondary sports these days.  They are still two of my favorites.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

There’s an excellent 30by30 doc, airing periodically on ESPN, about Tyson and Evander Hollyfield, that revisits that Douglas fight, along, of course, the infamous bite incident. It’s quite revealing, specially when it shows a present-day Tyson’s view of that period of his life. He’s humble, if not exactly apologetic, and a changed man still coming to terms with his spectacular downfall. I used to hate Tyson and that whole gangsta culture he inspired (which was stunned cold when he fell), but learned to respect his pathos and how he chose to reset his life. Even though many would say he’s only that way now because he lost, what he lost was way more than the title, and in that sense, it was worth, victims of his brutality notwithstanding. He certainly showed that it is possible, even for someone so completely immersed in himself (in what turned out to be his defensive armor from an even more brutal childhood), to come back to face his demons in a dignified way. Just a celebrity and his woes, I know. Still, one learns something every time, I guess. I felt sorry for Ronda too. Thanks for this post. Cheers

I think that Mike has honestly come full circle, and is back to his humble roots, Wes. When he was an up and coming phenom, under Cus D’Amato, he was a real student of the sport and very respectful of his opponents. After Cus, died and Mike won the title, he fell into the clutches of Don King. Kevin Rooney tried to keep Mike on the straight and narrow, but he was no match for King. He was consumed with his celebrity and his supposed invincibility. He went from everyone actually liking him, to someone everyone grew tired of, in a relatively short period of time. I think he genuinely has seen the error of his ways, and he’s now at peace with himself. Maturity – AKA: growing old – has a way of waking some people up. — YUR

Heh! I finally finished 11/22/15 puzzle, and now it is Sunday again. You guys made interesting comments on boxing which I actually watched in the 80s and 90s. I tried for 2 days to get DELUGE. Then I read letters to my husband, and 15 seconds later, he shouts out the answer. I think I’ve mentioned before how he can sometimes do that. I hope you had a pleasant Thanksgiving. I hope to catch up on some Jumbles this week since my office is now almost clean and paperwork from 2003-2014 is nearly filed or shredded! LOL
