Arm wrestling: The contestant on the right is in an injury-prone or “break arm” position. His shoulder must be in line with or behind the arm, as seen with the contestant on the left. This is cause for a referee to stop the match. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Answer:  HAND OVER FIST

(One of our stranger idioms, I’d say.  It’s supposed to mean making lots of money.  And, I guess, its supposed to mean quickly, too.  I just can’t visually process the literal act of hand over fist.  Anybody know the origins of the phrase?  We have another NEW clue word today!  ralis95 will be adding the word “rosier” to his clue word database.  I had a little trouble getting “fibula”, which is strange, because that is the only bone that I’ve ever broken in my life.  Old diehard Unclerave readers remember this!  Splendid answer letter layout.  Cool cartoon.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

    Unclerave:

Sometime back in the nineties I wrote a program for the Apple IIgs that solved the five and six letter Jumble words. It’s out there in the public domain somewhere if anyone can still find an Apple IIgs. It really just has a library of the words used in the Jumble that is encoded for quick lookup. I had been collecting the words for a few years prior to that.

I was going to rewrite it for the Mac and IOS about the time that David and Jeff took over the Jumble. Up to that time few new words were being added to the library as I had collected it. For example “BROACH” was added in November of 2005 and the next new word “HATCH” was not added until August of 2007! For a while David and Jeff were adding ten or so new words a week during most of 2011, 2012 and some of 2013 so I’ve been busy keeping my list up to date. So far in 2013 I have added about 90 new words.

Comparing my list to the one kept by ralis95, when you mention a new word, has been interesting. My list generally agrees closely with his. On rare occasions he has a word my list lacks and sometimes the opposite is true. This week I’ve found three where we don’t agree, which has never happened before!

    ROSIER – Jumble 10/23/11

    NATIVE – Jumble 07/03/11

    RUNNER – Jumble 07/31/11

I did rewrite my old program crudely in Python so I can check the Jumble each day. My initial library of words is encoded so the program is necessary to decode.

Can you tell me when David and Jeff took over?

Enjoy your blog. Now, when I get around to checking the Jumble words from a pile of newspapers a week or two high and can’t find a Jumble, I have a GREAT backup! I also enjoy all the extras you bring to the puzzles.

UNC..I Believe ” Hand over fist” means the vendor handing over an item in his hand at a marketplace while he has money in his fist to prevent stealing. It goes back to ancient times, way before you broke your fibula.. I also remember when you broke your fibula……Catching a touchdown pass from JOE FERGUSON in 1979 at rich stadium….but I could be wrong… GO BILLS!!!!!!

    Bob,
I’m not sure, but I think the boys took over the Jumble reins in the mid ’90s. I’m sure word differences are going to happen with yours and ralis95’s databases. I know ralis95 doesn’t get the Sunday one, so he kind of relies on me to point out any new words added on these Sunday ones. And, I’m sure both of you take vacations from time to time. Thanks for taking the time to write the long comment! And, thanks for the kind words. Stop by any time!

    Wimpy,
I’d buy that! LOL! Those Ferguson years were fun. They were competitive back then. Not like the Kelly years, of course, but they were fun to watch. This new kid, Thad Lewis, is keeping things interesting while E.J. is out. Tough game tomorrow. We got a good shot.
