Cease conceiving of education as mere preparation for later life, and make it the full meaning of the present life.”   —   John Dewey

(So many things to like about this quote!  First off, it is wonderful advice.  Too many of us view education as a kind of finite destination, when we should be viewing it as the ultimate, continuous journey.  It’s not always going to be pretty.  At times it might even be horrific.  But, whether you like it, or not, and you should love it, you learn something new almost every day.  And, if you don’t, you are probably just not paying attention.  Possibly, you are in a coma.  Secondly, I couldn’t find this specific quote in any of the online quotation repositories.  A couple of variations of this quote are there, but not this specific one.  It is online though.  He definitely said it.  It’s part of a larger quote, which reads:  “If I were asked to name the most needed of all reforms in the spirit of education, I should say:  ‘Cease conceiving of education as mere preparation for later life, and make it the full meaning of the present life.'”  Thirdly, and this is more to the Cryptoquote itself, including the author’s name it uses all but four letters of the alphabet.  All that are missing are B, Q, X, and Z.  Makes for a very satisfying solve.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Hats off to the Cryptoquote constructors! Yesterday one of the greatest ancient Greek philosophers, and today perhaps the greatest modern American philosopher (also an innovative educator). And yes, the near-pangram is a wonderful bonus!
