I believe in the principle that I can make a difference in this world.  It may be ever so small, but it will count for the greater good.”   —   Gordon B. Hinckley

(This is a great attitude to have!  Unfortunately, even those working for the greater bad believe this.  Fortunately, I think more of us are working for the greater good.  But, it doesn’t happen on its own!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Answer:  TELL-“TAIL SIGN

(See!!!  I told you they were setting us up for a toughie!  I zipped through the old favorite clue words, put the answer letter layout down, read the clue/question, then I . . . just stared off into space for a while.  I went and did the Cryptoquote, and then came back to it.  I knew that the word “tail” had to be part of the answer, but wasn’t sure if it was the one in quotes, or the last word.  I guess it could have been the first word, but I wasn’t thinking that way.  It finally just kinda hit me.

Three of the jumbles came up as new for me, with only the one for “input” definitely having been used before.  The answer letter layout was good enough to keep me guessing for a while.  The cartoon was great.  You can really see the dog eying the cat’s upright, frizzed out tail.  The poor baby better turn tail, and hightail it outta there, before that hellcat scratches its nose off!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it, and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.”   —   Lin Yutang

Answer: POLISHED OFF

(A little heavy on the clues today!  The Polish coat of arms on the wall, she’s polishing a silver pitcher, and chances are very strong that she’s eating Polish sausage!  I guess you could even argue she’s wearing a babushka, but that might be a stretch.

There were no new clue words today, but all of the jumbles have come up as new . . . again.  The answer letter layout was actually very good  A great jumble, that – by itself – gave nothing away.  I really liked the cartoon, but the totality of the clues was a bit much, for my taste.  Maybe the guys are just setting us up for a real tough stumper???  Let’s hope so!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The Earth Moves; We Hurt, Colltalers

The mega earthquake that hit Nepal Saturday has already triggered a familiar set of obvious realizations, callous statements, and the usual few insights that could potentially make a difference going forward, but most likely will soon be ignored by all.
We’re sure that those who can help, will, and in fact, we wish to express our sadness and solidarity with the ones having their time of reckoning. But we can’t help it but see a worn out sequence of reactions about to play out as it has many times before.
As aftershocks and the search for victims continue, news coverage will be centered on the devastation and on calls for international aid in the weeks ahead, with the occasional proverbial digression about the unpredictability of natural disasters.
Not to be flippant, but one can be sure that there’ll be wall-to-wall reporting, dramatic rescue footage…

(I wonder when he came to this realization?  From my experience, most artists have a bit of a self-absorption issue.  By and large they are wonderful people, but everyone else kind of just plays a part in their world.  It’s kinda like they’re in their own version of The Truman Show.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(Okay.  Obviously, Tiger Woods is not the only black golfer, just as Phil Mickelson is not the only left-handed golfer out there.  But, I think it works.  And, so does today’s pun/answer.  It may “boggle” your mind to learn that “boggle” is a new clue word for us.  If we had it before it must have come with a Sunday Jumble, before our friend started looking in on Sunday spoilers.  It can now be safely added to the ralis95 clue word database.  And, all of the jumbles appear to be new again!  Hmm!  The answer letter layout was, again, desirably cryptic today.  Nothing obvious about it.  And, the cartoon does a fine job showing what’s probably the first tee.  I like the divots and the “bonus clue” walking shoes.  That’s about it for today.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Review: Cherry Blossoms, Sushi and Takarazuka – Seven Years in Japan

I love cherry blossoms, and I’ve always wanted to go to Japan! — YUR

Cherry Blossoms, Sushi and Takarazuka: Seven Years in Japan  by Jill Rutherford

Published by Silverwood Press

RATING: 5 STARS

CherryBlossomSushi     Jill Rutherford’s memoir, Cherry Blossoms, Sushi and Takarazuka – Seven Years in Japan, takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of her experiences living in Japan. The idea of going to Japan began after Jill saw a short TV ad  about cultural oddities in the world. The Takarazuka Theater Company, an “over the top” Japanese all-female  group was the featured show. Jill loved the performance.  A few weeks later, her friend Jan spotted a newspaper ad about the upcoming shows of The Takazrazuka Theatre Company playing in London. Serendipity?  After seeing the Theatre group live, Jill was hooked on Takarazuka and this served as a catalyst for her to eventually cash in her life’s savings(!) to travel to Japan.

Jill persuades Jan to travel along with her and details their experiences of living in Japan as ESL instructors, stories of Japanese…

Answer:  FLAT BROKE

(Now, that’s a good stinky pun!  Have you ever noticed how many people say “broke” when the should be saying “broken”?  It’s really annoying.  I’m far from being the Grammar Police, but certain obvious offenses do irk me to no end.  Oh, well.  There were no new clue words today, but once again all the jumbles are coming up as new.  What up, Hoyty?  Anyway, none of them stumped me.  The answer letter layout was cryptic enough, but the whole set up made the answer fairly obvious . . . again.  Quality, but standard fare, cartoon.  It’s much more fun being snarky, folks!  That’s about it.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
