Only in these irrational, defense-dominated, paranoid-inducing times a peaceful agreement, which all but guarantees a commitment by a major Middle East player of not enriching weapons-grade uranium, would still be at risk of not being endorsed by the U.S. Congress.
For it’s been an arduous battle to get Iran to even discuss giving up its nuclear ambitions, while strife-prone Pakistan and India next door are allowed to keep their own programs alive, not to mention Israel, which remains adamantly against any such accord, period.
But so it’s the nature of foreign relations in our time, as they tend to belittle diplomatic efforts and overstate the efficacy of warfare. While the latter has been failing over and over, and costing lives and billions, the former is greeted with derision and given limited credence.

(I like this pun!  The set up is getting to be a little more than clichéd, but I thought the payoff was worth it.  There were no new clue words today.  Three of the jumbles were new, to me, with only the one for “adopt” definitely having been used before.  “Adopt” is one of those words that spells out in alphabetical order!  I loved the answer letter layout, because part of it spells out of which I’ve been accused!  Hey!  Who’s NOT guilty of a little dopiness from time to time?  Standard domestic cartoon.  Be well and do good, folks.)   —   YUR

PS.  Congrats to the Blue Devils of Duke University!  They are now 5 time champs!  My Mets won their opening day game, but we’re supposed to dismiss it, as they had no earned runs.  This is how the Yankee media chooses to deal with the Yankee’s Home opening day loss.  I guess losing 6-1 is more legitimate, because their 1 run was . . . earned.  It looks like Mets fans are in for the usual treatment, unless they truly contend for the playoffs and the Yankees flounder.  Then we will likely begin to see a number of front-running converts.   —   YUR
