Answer:  TOUCHED BASE

(Good pun.  Maybe, not as easy a solve it could have been.  They intentionally left the word base out after “stole second”, but then it’s kind of hanging out there in the word “baseball”.  There were no new clue words today, but all of the jumbles came up as new for me.  The answer letter layout was a beautiful jumble that gave nothing away.  And the cartoon tells a great story.  The clue/question might have been better if it substituted the word opposing for baseball.  The drawing makes it abundantly clear what sport it is.  That’s it.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.”   —   Adam Smith

(Surprisingly, this is the first Adam Smith quote, to be used in a Cryptoquote, since I’ve been posting these spoilers.  It wasn’t a difficult solve, but it did throw me a bit when I solved it.  I never knew that the earlier definition of “enthusiasm” was:  1a. belief in special revelations of the Holy Spirit and 1b. religious fanaticism – as per Merriam Webster‘s.  I have always used the word in the more generic/current definition of:  2a. strong excitement of feeling – ardor and 2b. something inspiring zeal or fervor – again, per Merriam Webster’s.  I guess this is another example of how language evolves.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
