Clue/Question: The mime’s girlfriend told the flirty woman that he was – – –
Answer: SPOKEN FOR
(A great old phrase, that I’m sure a number of people would – somehow – find offensive these days. Without seeing any specific etymology of the phrase, I’ll posit that it goes back to when a man would ask the father of a young woman for her hand in marriage. If the father approved of the impending union then that meant that the woman was now spoken for. It did grow to be used for other things, to imply ownership, but it’s still used more in terms of relationships.
All four clue words are classic Jumble clue words. Three of the jumbles are coming up as new, for me. But we’ve definitely seen “ropfo” in at least one earlier Jumble. None of them were too tough to get. The answer letter layout was a fine nine letter jumble. Very nicely cryptic. But the irony of Jumble shown through.
Fine cartoon of the busker/street performer, his very protective girlfriend, and the unusual stalker. I think that the crowd might be enjoying this little drama even more than the mime performance! I wonder if the girlfriend’s name is Bessie? An entertaining little Jumble. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
