Portrait of Woodrow Wilson Painting by Sir William Orpen

No man that does not see visions will ever realize any high hope or undertake any high enterprise.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(As long as he didn’t claim to have had “conversations with God”, I can’t condemn him.  Other than the overly punitive Treaty of Versailles, which indirectly resulted in WWII, I think he was a very good President.  21st Century sensibilities put too much fault on his so-called racist policies, but I don’t think he actually hated anyone.  He was just the victim of his upbringing, and the prevailing white man’s superiority mindset of the time.  Fortunately, most of us are much more enlightened these day.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t go for all of us.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Churchill and the Presidents: Woodrow Wilson - The Churchill Project - Hillsdale College

We cannot be separated in interest or divided in purpose.  We stand together until the end.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(Likely uttered upon the U.S. entering World War I.  Wilson had initially wanted the U.S. to remain neutral.  But, when he learned that Germany was trying to entice Mexico to to join them and attack us, and German submarines were now targeting American shipping, he realized that neutrality was no longer feasible.  Nowadays, he is being castigated for his “racist” ideology.  But, it’s yet another example of our holier than thou mentality of not understanding that much of the world was simply not as enlightened as we are today.  He actually did a great deal of good for our country, and should be remembered more for that.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(Woody was our “Academic President”, that’s why he sounds like that.  There are many ways to enrich the world, so go forth, and do something.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Power consists in one’s capacity to link his will with the purpose of others, to lead by reason and a gift of cooperation.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(I don’t remember enough of my U.S. history to conclude if he was a great president, or not.  I like that he was an academic, and that he pushed through banking reforms, and was an advocate for labor.  And of course, he presided over our entry, and victory, in World War I.  The U.S. emerged as a clear world power as a result.   My main problem is with the Treaty of Versailles.  Had it been far less punitive, we may have never seen the rise Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party.  Imagine how vastly different the world may have been if we never had a World War II.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Our friend, Lee, pointed out that yesterday’s quote was first used, in a poem, by Douglas Malloch.  Thomas S. Monson could have only borrowed it.  In looking up the quote though, I also found that it has also been attributed to J. Willard Marriott!  Based on the lifetimes of the three men, I tend to side with Lee.  Conceivably though, it could even be some paraphrase of an ancient Greek saying.  Interesting though.   —   YUR

Liberty has never come from the government.  Liberty has always come from the subjects of it.  The history of liberty is a history of resistance.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(Not mindlessly following everything we’re told by our government.  When things don’t add up, it’s our duty to question things.  And, if necessary, to insist and resist.  THAT’S the American Way, friends.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

One cool judgment is worth a thousand hasty counsels.  The thing to do is supply light and not heat.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(The man was ahead of his time.  I greatly admire his intellect, but I don’t necessarily agree with all of his policies.  Clearly, he started out with a 19th Century mindset.  But, he saw how the country – and the world – was changing, and he was doing his best to be both flexible and progressive.  We could do much worse – and have – than have another Ivy League university president – or academic – as our next Commander-in-chief.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The American revolution was a beginning, not a consummation.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(Said nearly 100 years ago.  With our current economic situation, and outlook, a rational question might be:  Does this quote still have merit?  Something to ponder.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  No offense to Woodrow, but his daughter, Jessie, is much more comely, in this picture,  than any picture of him that I could find.     YUR

Quotation from Woodrow Wilson's History of the...

Never attempt to murder a man who is committing suicide.”   —   Woodrow Wilson

(A little on the violent and gruesome side, but still a great quote!  I wonder in what context did he come up with this?!?!  Why make the effort, and put yourself at risk, for something that is ultimately going to achieve the same result?  Not exactly my favorite President, though.  He did set up the FTC, but it’s hard to forgive a guy for the Treaty of Versailles and Prohibition . . . and his apparent enthusiasm of the KKK!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
