If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”   —   Will Rogers

(A sentiment that I can definitely get behind!  In my newspaper the author’s name followed a different cipher than the quote.  Very strange.  How about you guys?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Lance Mannion: The successful don't work any harder than the failures

I would rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn Bridge than the man who sold it.”   —   Will Rogers

So live that you wouldn’t be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip.”   —   Will Rogers

(Easier said than done.  Everybody’s got opinions.  And, where else would you be as free to express them than at home, with your family?  Just don’t get too crazy!  The author line made this too obvious for me.  Too bad.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Our country has plenty of good five-cent cigars, but the trouble is they charge fifteen cents for them.”   —   Will Rogers

(A little play on Vice President Thomas R. Marshall’s famous line:  “What this country needs is a really good five-cent cigar.”  But of course, Will Rogers had to one up him!  Well, Will was a professional humorist.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”   —   Will Rogers

There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.”   —   Will Rogers

(Boy.  If old Will thought things were bad in his day . . .  At least he was mainly referring to our government’s ineptness, instead of the corruptness that pervades our government today.  Sure, there was corruption back then.  Our era certainly didn’t invent corruption.  But, today the corruption has become institutionalized.  So much so that we’re not only numb to it, we actually kind of expect it.  And that is sad.  At least in his day you could, relatively easily, get an audience with your senator or representative.  Nowadays, the main way to get an audience with any member of Congress is to be a lobbyist with a deep pocket of M.O.N.E.Y.!  Like with so many things that are wrong in society today we inadvertently let it happen.  Too much trust, not enough involvement, too much apathy, a little bit . . . a lot of bit . . . of all three.  One thing we could do, and should do, is insist on term limits.  Because, when these people become ensconced in their positions of power they quickly become inured to the ugly sense of entitlement.  If they knew that their time was short, and/or that we insisted on some measurable report card of productivity and achievement, in order to be allowed to run again, they would have to put us first.  Then maybe we would have a more accountable and productive government.  We need to take back our government, folks.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Know what you are doing.  Love what you are doing.  And believe in what you are doing.”   —   Will Rogers

(That’s a pretty big 3!  Starting with knowing makes a lot of sense, but knowing can be pretty relative.  And, if you love what you’re doing, you’d think it would – naturally – follow that you believe in what you’re doing.  Right?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”   —   Will Rogers

(Another great insight into the perils of complacency.  We shouldn’t ever feel like we’ve “arrived”.  We’ve all heard that life is not a destination, but a journey.  Well, it’s also a bit of a moving target . . . that sometimes shoots back!  Don’t be lulled into being a sitting duck, people.  Keep moving.  And, be prepared to zig when others are expecting you to zag.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  I chose this pic because the wife is attending a reunion in L.A. this weekend.  She spent a night at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel – a real treat – before switching to the hotel where the festivities are taking place.  Miss you, babe.  Have fun though!   —   YUR

Politics has got so expensive that it takes lots of money to even get beat with.”   —   Will RogersWill Rogers (19th century photo)

(Even though he might be America’s most beloved humorist, I bet there are plenty of English teachers out there cringing as they read this!  But, he was a real American.  More American than most of us, at least.  He was 1/4 Cherokee.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
