Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”   —   Vincent van Gogh

(Kind of ironic, coming from the guy who cut off  – part of? – his ear, allegedly to impress a prostitute.  I just read that the woman/girl that he – physically – gave it to was a cleaner at a brothel, and not the actual prostitute.  But was it intended for the prostitute?  Hmm!  He clearly wasn’t in a good place at that time, and eventually he shot and killed himself.  The experts refer to him as a Post-Impressionist, but I still think of him as mainly an Impressionist.  I can’t say whether this was a tough cipher, as I picked up on the author’s name right away.  I did struggle some to solve the Celebrity Cipher!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(Sounds like a very organized person!  Yes, he cut off his ear during a bought of depression.  And, yes, he eventually took his own life.  But, who can deny his genius?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.”   —   Vincent Van Gogh

(No doubt he said this as he debuted his – now iconic – The Starry Night!  The troubled genius took his own life at the age of 37.  At least his quasi-friend, Paul Gauguin, almost made it to age 55.  And, he spent some great years, as well as his final years, in French Polynesia!  Now, that’s an artist’s life that I would have enjoyed.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The more I think it over, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.”   —   Vincent Van Gogh

(I wonder when he came to this realization?  From my experience, most artists have a bit of a self-absorption issue.  By and large they are wonderful people, but everyone else kind of just plays a part in their world.  It’s kinda like they’re in their own version of The Truman Show.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.”   —   Vincent Van Gogh

(Poor Vincent!  Being so far ahead of his time was just too much for his delicate psyche.  Try to be tolerant of those you can’t seem to understand.  They just might be onto something big.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

If you hear a voice within you say:  You cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”   —   Vincent Van Gogh

(Too often those inner voices have a negative, defeatist tone.  Pay them no heed.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Problem solving flowsheet

(Well, that sounds simple enough.  Some people are very good at problem solving in their dreams.  On more than a few occasions, my wife has been able to go to bed thinking about a problem from work, dream about it, solve the problem in her dream, and then be able to apply her dream resolution to the waking problem.  People at work aren’t sure they should take her seriously, when she says she worked it out in a dream, but they don’t argue with her results!  Me?  Nowadays, I either don’t dream very much, or I generally just don’t remember them.  I used to have some fairly interesting dreams, but not so much anymore.  One thing for sure is that I can’t direct them.  Not like she does, anyway.   Maybe these days I just daydream more than some doBe well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
