(Oh my God!  I would have loved to have seen this guy play!  “The Grey Eagle” played in the same era as Ty Cobb and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.  He’s widely viewed as one of the greatest defensive Centerfielders of all time.  He wasn’t really a home run hitter, but he was an offensive dynamo!  He had a career batting average of .345!  A few fractions higher than Ted Williams.  That is the 6th all-time highest!  He had 3514 Hits – the 5th all-time highest!  Derek Jeter currently has 3068.  He hit 222 Triples – the 6th all-time highest!  He holds the record for most career Doubles, at 792!  Nearly 50 more than Pete Rose, and nearly 70 more than Stan Musial and Ty Cobb.  He struck out only 220 times in 10,195 at-bats!  That means he got on base more than 97% of the time!  But, it was his defensive prowess that really rounded him as one of the all-time greats.  6788 Putouts as an  Outfielder!  Second only to Willie Mays.  Number 1 all-time in Assists as an Outfielder, with 449.  That’s more than 50 more than Ty Cobb, who’s #2.  He turned 139 Double Plays as an Outfielder!  And, 6 of them were unassisted!  No other outfielder had more than 2 in their career.  He even took pickoff throws, at second base, from his catcher, because he played so shallow in centerfield, and would just sneak up on second.  Wow!  Now that would be something to see!)   —   YUR
