Clue/Question: The fancy new weather balloon was – – –
Answer: HIGH–TECH
(I don’t see a secure tether cable! This might be a repeat of last week’s JLENS balloon escape! There were no new clue words today, but all of the jumbles came up as new, for me. The answer letter layout could have been a lot better, guys. It doesn’t take a genius to see HIGH in HCGH. Moving the clue words around could have made it much more cryptic. The cartoon is swell though. Last week’s JLENS fiasco is another example of the U.S.’s bloated Defense spending. They’ve been trying to kill the program since 2010, but certain lobbyist groups won’t let it die. It’s already cost tax payers $2.7 billion, for this program that hasn’t performed well and is not very reliable. Many hawks try to portray reducing Defense spending as cutting the number of service personnel and/or cutting their pay and benefits. But that’s a complete red herring. There are plenty of white elephant programs, like JLENS, that are sucking away budget bucks, so that certain corporations and certain politicians can get richer and richer. All at the expense of Infrastructure, Education, Veterans Benefits, Social Security, Medicare, etc., etc. Ike tried to warn us. It’s a beast that is getting the best of us. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
