“The less seen, the more heard. The eye is the enemy of the ear in real drama.” — Thornton Wilder

(I don’t know if Mr. Wilder was going for something deeper, but it is true that we humans are very visual creatures. And, very often, seeing is very distracting. Especially to hearing. You might easily miss a bit of dialogue from a well lit stage, because your attention might be drawn to a prop, a piece of scenery, or a lesser – but more attractive – character who is not speaking. But, when they dramatically dim the lights, and a voice rings out in the dark void, we become very focused on what is being said. The funny thing is, relative to a lot of other animals, none of the three senses of sight, hearing and smell are all that strong in humans. I’m not sure how we rank in terms of taste and touch. If it wasn’t for our larger, and more complex, brains we probably would not have survived as a species. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
