Did John Adams Out Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings? | History| Smithsonian Magazine

Wenever you do a thing . . . ask yourself how you would act were all the world looking at you.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(If Tommy boy were alive today he would be “canceled” by the #MeToo movement.  It wouldn’t even matter – to that group – if he and Sally Hemings were genuinely in love.  They would say that he used his position of authority to coerce her into their sexual relationship.  It’s like the injustice of a lot of the statutory rape cases, where both parties were teens, and both entered into the relationship consensually.  Intransigent thinking is always going to be intransigent thinking.  Too much in society today is “Zero Tolerance”, and in my opinion that is dangerous.  Intolerance is the greatest threat to democracy.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  I know WHENEVER is written with a H, but my newspaper omitted the I that would be the H.  How about your newspaper?      YUR

It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(I think this is something T.J. came up with to tell Martha, so he could actually spend a bunch of time with Sally!  Ol’ Tom was definitely a dog.  But he didn’t deserve to have his statues desecrated.  NO statues should be desecrated!  Hopefully, that nonsense is over.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

It is the trade of lawyers to question everything, yield nothing and talk by the hour.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(It’s allowed, folks.  Tom started off as a lawyer.  No one ever refers to him as “Tom” though.  But, I wonder what his friends called him?  I’m always amused – and slightly annoyed – by guys who insist on being called by their full first name.  I don’t care what your mama named/called you!  Life is too short to put up with you correcting everyone who calls you by the perfectly acceptable nickname.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

No man will ever bring out of the Presidency the reputation which carries him into it.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(It used to be that every child had the potential to grow up to be President.  But now, it seems one of the requirements might be a certain kind of masochistic streak.  The constant scrutiny has gone beyond the pale.  Obama caught it from the right, and now Trump is catching it from the left.  I don’t think that Obama enjoyed it very much, but Trump seems to relish and thrive on it.  And, after they are dead and gone, you get all the allegations of one thing, or another.  Reminds me of that quote from earlier in the week: “Half the work that is done in the world is to make things appear what they are not.”   —   E.R. Beadle  What has happened to us as a country???  The divisiveness is destroying us.  Let’s stop playing “Gotcha!”, and let’s start playing “I get ya!”  It starts with actually listening to each other, and goes on with empathizing with the other.  Cooperation and compromise were never meant to be dirty words, ya know!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Dog Abuse in Virginia!

Do you guys think dogs should be left chained up outside, in ALL kinds of extreme weather, day and night?  Well, the House Agriculture Subcommittee in Virginia thinks it’s just fine!  They refuse to vote on a bill (SB872) that would prevent this type of abuse.  Allegedly, “they’re in bed with the hunting lobby and the dog breeders; they are corrupt; their votes have been purchased.”

If you’ve got the time, and the inclination, give these guys a call, and give them a piece of your mind.  (Or, write them an email.)

Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(Even Thomas Jefferson didn’t trust the corporate media!  And, believe me folks, it has only gotten much much worse.  They tell us only what they want us to know, and they frame it as though we should never question it.  And, it’s not restricted only to the “news”.  Even the late night talk shows went out of their way to dismiss Bernie Sanders, despite the facts that he polled much higher than the CORONATED ONE, and he drew five times more people to his rallies than she did.  But, even with the earliest of the primary wins they kept telling us that he couldn’t win?  And, whenever they would report on her popular vote “majority” they would conveniently omit that her primary wins were mainly in closed primary states, where Independents could not participate.  If you want an unbiased look at what’s really going on in this country, and the world, you need to listen/read alternative news sources, and also some from other countries.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

(I guess it’s the age old battle of confidence versus self-doubt.  I think we all experience both of these feelings/beliefs during the course of our lives.  Overly deep thinking seems to engender the anchors of self-doubt, whereas confidence seems to just kind of spring from the wings of the Can Do spirit.  Can we do it all?  Probably not.  But, we can definitely do more than we think we can.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(No wonder the conservative revisionist hawk-types want to down play Thomas Jefferson’s role in our history books!  Seems like their only response, to those who call for cooler heads, is to bring up Neville Chamberlain.  Well, guess what?  Just because some foreign leader is doing something contrary to our interests, it doesn’t make them the second coming of Hitler.  We are powerful enough . . . to give peace a chance.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”   —   Thomas Jefferson

Helen Keller

(That sounds to me like we have permission, perhaps even a duty, to revolt . . . from time to time.  The tricky thing is that some of today’s tyrants mask themselves in patriotism.  And to me, it’s not specifically about individuals, although there are some who do qualify as tyrants.  It’s more about a system that has grown tyrannical.  It’s been happening incrementally over the years, and many of these changes . . . for the worse . . . have been rationalized by the need for security.  Helen Keller once said:  “Security is mostly a superstition.  It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.  Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.  Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”  The politics of fear is very pervasive, but it can’t work forever.  Be well and do good, friends.  Happy Fourth of July to all of my American brothers and sisters!)   —   YUR
