“The world is quickly bored by the recital of misfortune and willingly avoids the sight of distress.” — Somerset Maugham
(Boy, have things changed since Maugham’s days! People may not watch the news as much these days, but with the internet and social media misfortune and distress are the order of the day. It’s unfortunate, because it leads to an intolerant, mob mentality. A kangaroo court of public opinion. People have become cowed to the popular point of view, and that’s kind of pathetic. I still prefer looking at both sides of an issue, and not jumping to conclusions, but I feel like I’m in a rapidly shrinking minority. Remember when this was more the norm? “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. Take this stand these days and you could be ostracized! Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

“You can do anything in this world if you are prepared to take the consequences.” — W. Somerset Maugham
(And, sometimes you don’t even have to take those consequences. Story this past week about a woman missing for some thirty years. They found her skeletal remains sealed behind a wall in the house that she had lived in. Turns out her husband, the prime suspect, killed her – they think – and lived with her, in the wall, until he passed away at the age of 82. Police said they couldn’t justify a search warrant for the home! Doesn’t give one a confident feeling about some of our law enforcement agencies! Be well and do good, friends.) —YUR
“Love is only a dirty trick played on us to achieve continuation of the species.” —W. Somerset Maugham
(Nah, Bill. Dat ain’t love, bro! Making love can be a wondrous aspect of love, but one is not reliant on the other. Be well and do good, friends. Love each other.) —YUR
“A good hairdresser can express every mood and every passion of the human heart.” —W. Somerset Maugham
(Ol’ Bill here, must have been a real hoot watching football at the sports bars, or at the weekly poker game! Great writer, but maybe . . . coulda used a little more testosterone. Ya think???) —YUR 😉
