Family members of a fallen Paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne Division place a yellow rose at the base of the Global War on Terrorism memorial during the All American Memorial Ceremony at the 82nd Airborne History Museum, May 18. The memorial ceremony is held every year during the 82nd’s All American Week Celebration to honor the sacrifices of past and present Paratroopers and their families. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word:  Freedom, Justice, Honor, Duty, Mercy, Hope.”   —   Winston Churchill

I’m always ready to learn, although I don’t always like being taught.”   —   Winston Churchill

The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see.”   —   Winston Churchill

(There is a huge difference between studying, knowing and appreciating history . . . and living in the pastWith today’s overemphasis – in my opinion, at least – on math and science, combined with the philosophy of living in the moment, while looking to the future – which I actually subscribe to – I think that too many of us have lost sight of this distinction.   I think that old Winnie has succinctly hit  the nail on the head.  Spot on, as the Brits would say.  Don’t be some kind of history parrot though.  Realize that history is written by the victors, and it’s fairly malleable and subject to political whims.  But, don’t be arrogant enough to ignore it, or write it off as merely the past.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Kites rise highest against the wind – not with it.”   —   Winston Churchill

(Leave it to old Winnie, for the pithiest of quotes!  So much insight and truth, in eight short words.  This actually ties in very nicely with yesterday’s Jumble Spoiler.  Ben Franklin was fighting against the mentality of conventionality, much to many’s dismay.  Yet, he didn’t allow others obstinance to deter him.  Don’t just go along, people.  Break free from the constraints of conditioning and indoctrination.  Think critically.  Be well and do good . . . better . . . best, friends.)   —   YUR

Out of intense complexities, intense simplicities emerge.”   —   Winston Churchill

(Kind of ironic.  I was almost ready to ask for help with this one!  I let the big words throw me.  It was rough deciding which letter was the E and the T and S.  I finally decided that the two shortest words had to be either ONE OF, or OUT OF.  When I played around with OUT OF I saw the the T and O in Winston, and realized I’d been looking at Winston Churchill for about 40 minutes!  Pretty tough!  Perseverance, and stepping away for a couple of minutes helped.  Be well and do good , friends.)   —   YUR

My most brilliant achievement was my ability to persuade my wife to marry me.”   —   Winston Churchill

(My life is just so much easier.  I just got my wife pregnant, and said:  Hey, do you want to get married?.  That was pretty much all it took.  Then we got married.  Then we had a baby.  Then we went on a honeymoon.  Then we got an engagement ring.  25 years and counting!  Peace out, pilgrims!)   —   YUR

Winston Churchill in 1904.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”   — Winston Churchill

(I think this was one of Winnie’s few Hallmark moments.  Very likely made later in life.  Most of his quotes are of a much more serious nature.  Outside of William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill is probably the most quoted Brit in history.  I was a little off on this one, this morning.  I originally had the second word as “have” instead of “make”.  It didn’t take away from solving the rest of the quote, so no harm, no foul.)   — YUR

PS.  By the looks of this photo, circa 1904, I’d say that Winnie was well into his drinking life! YUR

I am certainly not one of those who need to be prodded.  In fact, if anything, I am the prod.”   — Winston Churchill

(So . . . Winnie had no problem being the pitcher, but didn’t care for being the catcher?  I know.  I’m bad. Enjoy the weekend.  And, the Kentucky Derby!  ‘Sposed to be a sloppy track today.  There’s some old saying about betting on a grey horse when it’s sloppy, so you might want to look at Coveyance or Paddy O’Prado.  The odds-makers have PO’P as a little more of a long shot, but he’s got the more experienced jockey, and the horse knows Churchill Downs.  He trains there.  But, watch out for Ice Box and Awesome Act.  They’ve both run in mud and Ice Box has a great late kick!  Super Saver could be in the mix, but everyone will be wary of jockey Calvin Borel this year.  My dark horse is Line of David!  Lots of speed, good jockey, and anything can happen in a field of 20 on a sloppy track.  If nothing else, you’re likely to hear his name as a contender for the first 3/4s of the race.  Like I know anything!) —   YUR
