How (and What) to Drink in 2018, With a Little Help From Winston Churchill

A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.”   —   Winston Churchill

(I think this is what Donald Trump was counting on when he first floated the “Big Lie”!  He also subscribes to repeating it as often as possible.  Open your eyes and . . . be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Winston Churchill - Quotes, Paintings & Death - Biography

Out of intense complexities, intense simplicities emerge.”   —   Winston Churchill

(Either Winnie was paraphrasing someone else, or someone else paraphrased Winnie, because I’ve definitely heard a variation of this quote before.  This was a tough one for me to get started.  I figured OUT OF early on, but wouldn’t commit to it until I figured out the E and the T.  I also figured the last name ended in either ETT, ESS, ELL, ALL . . . or ILL, and finally realized we were dealing with CHURCHILL.  Didn’t they used to say that all babies look like Winston Churchill?  LOL!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The Hawker Hurricane - the forgotten star of the Battle of Britain.

It’s not good enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”   —   Sir Winston Churchill

(Essentially, do . . . or die!  The Luftwaffe was larger and better equipped than the RAF.  But, the British fighter pilots were fighting for their homes and their families.  They prevailed, largely because they knew they had to.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Headmasters have powers at their disposal with which Prime Ministers have never yet been invested.”   —   Winston Churchill

(I spun my wheels for quite a while on this one.  I did have the E correct, and I was pretty certain of NEVER.  But I initially thought the J was the I, and the N was the S, and the Z was the A.  I didn’t straighten myself out until I finally recognized the author.  Even so the puzzle took me some work..  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”   —   Winston Churchill

(There should be a comma after IN.  And, this is only a segment of the much larger quote where he was essentially rebuking the appeasement policy of his predecessor Prime Ministers.  Everyone kind of dumps on Neville Chamberlain, but he was continuing the same policy of his predecessors.  Ironically, we are now in the midst of a kind of appeasement with Saudi Arabia.  We’ve put up with their human rights violations for quite a long time, because of various oil and arms deals, and because of their supposed status as being an “ally”.  But, can we seriously allow them to get away with murdering  an American citizen???  Currently, it’s still an “alleged murder”, but it does appear to be so.  I’ve been extremely leery of Saudi Arabia ever since 9/11/2001.  Things have only gotten worse since their involvement in the civil war in Yemen.  With friends like this . . . who needs enemies?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955. Deutsch: Winston Churchill, 1940 bis 1945 sowie 1951 bis 1955 Premier des Vereinigten Königreichs und Literaturnobelpreisträger des Jahres 1953. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In the course of my life, I have often had to eat my words, and I must confess that I have always found it a wholesome diet.”   —   Winston Churchill

(Getting a little cocky there, aren’t we, Winnie!  This was an easy solve, of a fairly long quote.  The thing that made it interesting for me, and I’m not sure if this was by design or something my newspaper did, was that the author’s last name was split up, from one line to the next!  I was thinking: I’ve never seen anybody with the last name CHILL!?!  I’m glad that it came out that way, because – straight out – the author name, Winston Churchill,  is readily identifiable.  And, for me, that takes away some of the challenge.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”   —   Winston Churchill
