Who Is Seneca? Inside The Mind of The World's Most Interesting Stoic

We should give as we would receive, for there is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.”   —   Seneca

(Don’t go laying a guilt trip on the recipient!  That just cheapens the entire act.  Be well, be generous, and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.”   —   Seneca

(Never was a more poetic truism spoken!  Everybody’s got the dues in life to pay.”  “You got to lose to know how to win.”  Okay, kids!  Name that tune!   Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Wisdom does not show itself so much in precept as in life – in firmness of mind and mastery of appetite.”   —   Seneca

(I’ve got a big old squishy mind, and I eat WAY too much.  I told you guys I was just a wiseguy!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

It is the superfluous things for which men sweat.”   —   Seneca

(Whether this was from Seneca the Elder – less likely – or Seneca the Younger – more likely, neither one of them knew much about real sweat.  I sweat wondering how I’m going to pay next month’s mortgage payment.  Very often I wake up in a cold sweat.  Such is life as a 99 %er.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

That which is given with pride and ostentation is rather an ambition than a bounty.”   —   Seneca

(This quotation harkens back to an earlier one about good deeds and ulterior motives.  My Dad used to say we were part Seneca Indian.  I never found out if he was just pulling our leg, or was serious.  Maybe one of my aunts can clear it up for me.  I know it’s a completely different Seneca, but I likely have more Native American in me than Roman/Italian.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.”   — Seneca

(I guess ol’ Seneca was having one of his better days, because the exact opposite could also be said.   —  I’m just a little tired.) —   YUR
