Heroes need monsters to establish their heroic credentials.  You need something scary to overcome.”   —   Margaret Atwood

(Classic heroes, not sports heroes.  With the classic hero we often have to create the monster, by demonizing the other guy.  It’s not necessarily fair, or accurate, but that is what’s done.  I wonder how Margaret pronounces “hero”?  The slightly more exaggerated HE-RO, or the more subtle HERE-O.  I prefer the subtle, but I often hear the more exaggerated.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

A good many car drivers don’t need seat belts as much as they need straight jackets.”   —   Source Unknown

(Don’t get me started on bad drivers!  I could go on for days.  Although, pretty much all of us, at some point in time, have been guilty of some kind of lapse of judgment behind the wheel.  But, when it’s the other guy . . . they’re an idiot!  LOL!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Comics can be an extremely powerful way to express a message.   —   Sandra Bell-Lundy

(Yes, they can.  But, “Between Friends” is fairly benign and non-political.  In my newspaper it replaced “Cathy”.  They have some similarities, but “Between Friends” is much more readable.  We welcome Ms. Bell-Lundy to the Cryptoquote Club today!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

What the world needs is more geniuses with humility.  There are so few of us left.”   —   (Not YUR)  Oscar Levant

(This guy actually was a genius.  I’m just a wise-guy, wannabe – kinda dualistic – bonehead/genius.  A very clever quote, but a very easy Cryptoquote solve.  I always note the punctuation first, so I saw THERE ARE right off the bat.  And then THE.  I’ve visited his grave before, in Westwood Village Memorial Park.  Which is in LA, but NOT “downtown” Los Angeles, as was pointed out to me by one of my readers some time ago.  If you’re ever in LA, I highly recommend visiting WVMP, as it’s only an acre or so large, but has so many big name celebrities – of all ilk – buried there.  Forest Lawn Memorial Park is like 300 acres, and would take you multiple days to get through.  The picture I chose of Oscar shows the effects of his life of smoking.  He died of a heart attack, at only 65.  I may not be a genius, but I still have my own teeth, and don’t look like some sort of ghoul.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life.  They are what we have been through and who we want to be.”   —   Lauren Hutton

(Okay.  I’ll buy the “what we have been through” part, but not the “who we want to be” part.  Who wants to be like a prune?  From what I can tell, this is our first quote from Ms. Hutton at the Cryptoquote.  So, we welcome her to the Cryptoquote Club!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Hope is independent of the apparatus of logic.”   —   Norman Cousins

I have a wonderful make-up crew.  They’re the same people restoring the Statue of Liberty.”   —   Bob Hope

(Even though he was born in London, England . . . who was more American than Bob Hope?!?!  He made 57 tours for the USO, entertaining American troops, over the years.  His family came through Ellis Island when he was 5 years old.  He hosted the Oscars 19 times!  He starred in numerous movies and television specials.  And he was invited to the White House on numerous occasions.  He lived a few months past his 100th birthday!  A great American.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
