Biography – LA ROCHEFOUCAULD, FRANÇOIS-ALEXANDRE-FRÉDÉRIC, Duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, Duc d'Estissac – Volume VI (1821-1835) – Dictionary of Canadian Biography

Loyalty is in most people only a ruse used by self-interest to attract confidences.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

(What a bizarre thing for a 17th Century moralist to say about loyalty!  I’ve always considered loyalty a great virtue.  Maybe, he had grown a little jaded?  Maybe, the quote has lost a little something in translation???  Be well and do good, friends.)   —    YUR

Biography – LA ROCHEFOUCAULD, FRANÇOIS-ALEXANDRE-FRÉDÉRIC, Duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, Duc d'Estissac – Volume VI (1821-1835) – Dictionary of Canadian Biography

Some people with great virtues are disagreeable, while others with great vices are delightful.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

(Most people get too much credit for the good things they’ve done, while others get too much damnation for their wrongs.  Each one of us is a mixture of what we call good and bad.  Recognizing a good trait in a “bad person” tends to be frowned upon – unfairly, in my opinion – in today’s society.  I guess it’s not the politically correct thing to do.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

This is Versailles: Grand Officers of the Crown

Were we perfectly acquainted with an object, we should never passionately desire it.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

(Is this some kind of warning about incest, or something?  These 17th Century French quotes just blow my mind!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I know it’s only the first FULL day of Spring, but Happy birthday to Ray Dorset!

Some people with great virtues are disagreeable, while others with great vices are delightful.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

(Kind of like Raymond “Red” Reddington, on “The Blacklist”!  Of course his vices are pretty extreme, but he always makes me laugh.  Most goody two-shoes are a tad too rigid, and they lack a sense of humor.  Thankfully, most of us fall somewhere in between the two.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(I kind of feel like I cheated with this one.  I was pretty sure I identified the E right off the bat, but the A gave me second thoughts, because EEA is not all that common.  So, I looked at the author, and saw it was most likely ED, DE . . . or LA, and I quickly recognized the famous Frenchman.  That gave me a lot to work with.  I don’t know why I sometimes have trouble spotting PEOPLE.  Maybe the X’s threw me off today?  The quote is just so true!  Give me a man, or woman, with vices any day!  Virtuous people can be such a bore.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

We all have the strength enough to endure the misfortunes of others.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

Image result for bravery

True bravery is shown by performing without witness what one might be capable of doing before all the world.”   —   La Rochefoucauld

(I’m wondering if that is even possible these days.  There seems to be cameras, and other instruments of surveillance, just about everywhere these days.  But, doing the right thing, whether in public, or in what we’ve always perceived as in private, is always worth doing.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Seems yer uncle was correct.  The Rogers Hornsby quote was used before, about two years ago, in March of 2015!     YUR

Quarrels would not last so long if the fault were on only one side.”   —   Francois de La Rochefoucauld

(It took quite a while to get this one started.  Then it took quite a while to fix my having the Q as the O, the G as the N and the D as the T!  Once I straightened those three things out it went pretty smoothly!  I think this is the first time we’ve had the author’s full name.  Usually we just get the La Rochefoucauld.  Very quotable dude!  A great observationist, who was a talented writer!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Just outside Eureka Springs in the Arkansas Oz...

Just outside Eureka Springs in the Arkansas Ozarks–itself a divine place–lies this small, peaceful, non-denominational chapel. Even as I feel the distance between the organized religion I was raised with and myself grow, places like this remind me of why the underlying faith meant and continues to mean so much to me. Designed by E. Fay Jones in 1979, completed in July 1980. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Repentance is not so much remorse for what we have done as the fear of the consequences.”   —   Rochefoucauld

(Which is one of the reasons why I don’t subscribe to any organized religion.  Control – especially, via fear – is highly insulting, to me.  For me, adhering to The Golden Rule suffices.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
