The one sure way to conciliate a tiger is to allow oneself to be devoured.”   —   Konrad Adnenauer

(I’m sure that works out very well . . . for the tiger.  I was thinking “conciliate”, but I’d already used the C!  Then, I realized my Kraut heritage, and change Conrad to Konrad.  That freed up the C!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Happy birthday to Wally Bryson, of The Raspberries!  (Good ’70s tune.  Emulating The Beatles . . . with a little help from George Harrison.)

History is the sum total of the things that could have been avoided.”   —   Konrad Adneauer

(That is one way to look at it.  If the Treaty of Versailles hadn’t been so punitive, maybe post WWI Germany wouldn’t have been plunged into the depths of such a terrible depression.  Possibly avoiding the rise of a disappointed art student, who went on to wreak havoc throughout Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.  And, that’s just one glaring example.  Unless . . . that was all part of a larger, more nefarious plan, as some have asserted.  I’ve always loved history, but it can be a rather sticky subject, being that it is predominantly written by the victors.  We should try to stay open to the less official versions of it, if we want a clearer picture of what actually happened.  Don’t be cowed into thinking the word revisionism is something despicable, because it ain’t necessarily so.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

An infallible method of conciliating a tiger is to allow oneself to be devoured.”   —   Konrad Adenauer

(I guess then at least one of us would be happy!  The trouble with quotations like this is there needs to be context.  The quote itself is all over the place, but there is no context.  He was a German statesman, so he must have been referring appeasement to a more powerful state.  The United States?  The Soviet Union?  Simple search engine queries got me nowhere.  Maybe some of you academic types know what he was getting at.  I’m all ears.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Yesterday’s tough Cryptoquote garnered more queries than the Jumble did!  And, that is very unusual.   —   YUR
