“I used to think the only use for sports was to give small boys something else to kick besides me.” — Katharine Whitehorn
(Wow! Humorous, but also a little dark. I know it’s not “politically correct”, but to a – hopefully – much lesser extent, the words of John Lennon still ring true, in too much of the world: Woman is the nigger of the world. Can you imagine if someone were to try and come out with a song like this today? I, personally, believe that banning language is both childish and counter-productive. It’s like putting a band-aid over an infected wound. It might look a little better, to the untrained eye, but it’s just a cover up. The wound still festers. If/When people can’t use “The N-Word” – F-ing ridiculous – they just come up with alternative slurs, like thug. When you really think about it, any word can be turned into invective, by simply using inflection. Just listen to the corporate media, especially our friends at Fox News. Instead of wasting everybody’s time, banning “offensive” words, we should be addressing the irrational fears, hatred and general ignorance that causes people to lash out at people who are different from them. It’s only through knowledge and understanding that we will ever get past the primal urge to dehumanize the “other guy”. Some people will argue that banning certain words is just the first step, but I see it much more as a slippery slope. It’s a very scary form of censorship. And censorship is anathema to a free society. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
PS. Zemanta did provide some lovely pictures of Ms. Whitehorn, but unfortunately they are all “owned” by Getty Images. As stated many many times, I won’t give in to their BS. — YUR
