An age is called dark, not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it.”   —   James Michener

(Folks – unfortunately – get a little too comfortable in their ignorance.  They only see what they want to see, until they’re shown the light.  And, even then sometimes they refuse to acknowledge some inconvenient truths.  Besides being a great novelist, James was also a great patron of the arts.  He was also not shy about entering into a mixed marriage, as he wed his third – and last – wife Mari Yoriko Sabusawa in 1955.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I am a humanist because I think humanity can, with constant moral guidance, create a reasonably decent society.”   —   James Michener

(I completely agree with Mr. Michener!  A great writer, who liked being married.  He married both his second and third wives within a year of divorcing his previous spouse.  I couldn’t find any photos of his first two wives, Patti and Vange.  His third marriage, to a Japanese-American woman, Mari Yoriko Sabusawa, lasted the longest.  Nearly 40 years.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.”   —   James Michener

(Sounds like a plan, Jimmy!  But, for me it’s more like fear the food and reject the religion, but that’s because I’m married to a Filipina.  Just gimme a six-pack, a bag of doodles or chips, and park my butt in front of the game, and I’m a happy camper.  I generally prefer dogs anyway.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

An age is called dark, not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it.”   —   James Michener

(Are you listening, people?  I think we live in a new kind of dark age.  It’s not entirely our fault, because powerful forces are – pretty successfully – trying to keep us in blinders.  But, we do share in some of the responsibility.  We all need to force ourselves to open our eyes to some not so pretty truths.  Denial can never lead to improvement.)   —   YUR
