I’m like the little boy who learned how to spell ‘banana’ and never knew when to stop.”   —   Hubert Humphrey

(When my son was little we kinda did the same thing with “Miami”.  Maybe not exactly the same, but we got a lot of laughs out of it.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Behind every successful man stands a surprised mother-in-law.”   —   Hubert Humphrey

(Hubie was very good with the clever quips.  I always struggle with the Cryptoquote in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.  They only carry it on Sundays.  Instead of being more horizontal, like a normal newspaper would run it, it’s very vertical, with two words on top of one word, on top of two words, on top of the hyphenated word, that starts out on one line and ends up on another.  Very annoying.  And, in general, their editor just doesn’t seem to have much respect for the puzzles they run.  Or the comics, for that matter.  They’re all the reduced sized ones, and they’re too many, crammed on to two pages.  They should either get rid of a few of the more irrelevant – in my opinion – ones, or spring for a third page.  In my opinion, newspapers are failing because of poor editors, as much as anything else.  How’s that for an extraneous rant?  LOL.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(I guess you might call them The Three Ds of Democracy!  There are similarities between debate and discussion, although with discussion there is probably a higher level of agreement.  And, hopefully, an openness and/or transparency of what is being discussed.  Debate is more a give and take, of generally differing opinions.  Sometimes they are civil, and other times not so much.  But, they help to give us options.  Dissent is always a little dicier.   Dissent is opinion – very often expressed through protest – of opposition to official government policy.  For a society to be free it has to allow for this kind of public criticism.  Very often it takes dissent to wake people up, so there can be debates, and hopefully constructive discussion.  That is how change is affected.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The right to be heard does not include the right to be taken seriously.”   —   Hubert Humphrey

(Oftentimes, those making those particular judgment calls are completely within their rights.  However, far too often the so-calledconventional wisdom” can be quite slanted by the ruling parties, to the point where valid contrary views are not given their due respect.  This is something that we all need to be cognizant of, or we’ll end up like intolerant sheep, living in a kind of police state.  Be well, do good . . . and be open-minded, friends.)   —   YUR
