One of the attractive things about flowers is their beautiful reserve.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(Just watch out for that stem!  And, hopefully it’s not a cold . . . or wet pumpkin.  I’m finally caught up, guys!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(I think there’s a lot of people out there whose eyes I wouldn’t want to see through!  Oh, okay.  Maybe, just for an instant.  Brilliant guy, that Thoreau, but sometimes he was a bit flaky . . . like most of us.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

It is the greatest of all advantages to enjoy no advantage at all.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(Sounds like harmony to me!  Or, at the very least . . . parity.  Growing up largely in the ’60s and ’70s, I remember fondly when the playing field was a relatively level one.  It slowly began tilting, in one direction, starting in 1981 with the decertification of PATCO.  From there, workers’ rights everywhere began to weaken.  Couple that with the incremental deregulations and automations, that also began in the ’80s, and you see how the corporations and the wealthy were able to take over the entire game.  Now we’re a land – largely – of HAVES and have NOTS, our economy is in shambles and the Middle Class is a fading memory.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

The broadest philosophy is narrower than the worst poetry.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(Not the biggest poetry fan, so I don’t really get this.  And, I don’t really care.  All I know for sure is as tough as yesterday’s Cryptoquote was . . . today’s was ridiculously easy.  The words “THE” and “THAN” almost jumped off the page, and the author was also a huge give away.  Whenever I see a three word/name author, with words of that length, I immediately think of two authors.  Today’s author and Ralph Waldo Emerson.  I really wish for some of these more recognizable, quotable authors they would vary the name, a la Ralph W. Emerson or R.W. Emerson.  I probably just need to avert my eyes away from the author more, like I do with the cartoon in the Jumble.  On a fun note, queries for yesterday’s Cryptoquote outnumbered the queries for the Jumble.  I think that’s a first.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

To a philosopher all news, as it is called, is gossip, and they who edit and read it are old women over their tea.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(It sounds to me like he made this up when confronted with some “news” that everybody – save himself – already knew.  Better to sound pithy, than to appear ignorant!  And, I’m not one to impose current sensibilities on works, and thought processes, from days gone by, but by today’s standards Mr. HDT would probably be labeled a male chauvinist.  Perhaps, even a misogynist.  It’s a good thing you’re dead, Henry!  I know some chicks that would . . .  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
