I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth.  I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar.”   —   Helen Hayes

(For many people gardening can be like a religious experience.  You’re communing with nature, and you can be one with the universe.  I used to enjoy the planting of trees and shrubs and flowers.  It’s the upkeep that I never enjoyed.  Ms. Hayes used to live in a beautiful house, in Nyack, NY, overlooking the Hudson River.  She called it Pretty Penny!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Only the poet can look beyond the detail and see the whole picture.”   —   Helen Hayes

(Hopefully then, we all have a bit of the poet in us.  Not seeing the forest for the trees is terrible thing.  I love the scene in Field of Dreams when the brother-in-law, Mark, played by Timothy Busfield, who wants Ray to end his crazy fantasy, is so relieved when his little niece is okay.  He looks out on the “stupid” baseball field and finally says:  “Where did all of these baseball players come from?”  It was perfect.  Not exactly the same thing, but . . .  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

We relish news of our heroes, forgetting that we are extraordinary to somebody too.”   —   Helen Hayes

(I think she is very generous in her use of the word “heroes”.  Celebrities, be they movie stars or athletes, while generally being admirable, don’t quite meet my definition of hero.  Every day people; firemen, teachers, doctors/veterinarians, soldiers, police, moms and dads, etc. are the real heroes.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

On the first day of Spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth.  I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar.”   — Helen Hayes

(Our first quotation from the First Lady of the American Theatre!  She undoubtedly enjoyed gardening at Pretty Penny, her longtime estate along the Hudson River, in beautiful Nyack , NY.)   — YUR
