Harriet Beecher Stowe - HISTORY

The past the present and the future are really one:  they are today.”   —   Harriet Beecher Stowe

(The woman wrote the book that helped lead to the end of slavery in the United States.  Just don’t think that the North was lily white leading up to the Civil War, because they weren’t!  There was a sick kind of enabling game going on to appease the Southern states, because for a long time the Southern states were the money makers.  Industrialization helped the North to develop somewhat of a backbone.  Most don’t realize there were slaves in the “free state” of New Jersey right up to the Civil War.

But, when the South seceded the North/Union was more concerned about competition for the western territories, than actually “freeing the slaves”.  The Monroe Doctrine didn’t anticipate a non-European entity intervening in the Americas!  Expansionism was the dirty, un-publisized, reason for “preserving the Union”.  The freeing of the enslaved people was simply the auspicious – and moral – byproduct of the war.  History books are written by the victors.  They get to frame the story into good guys versus villains.  When you’re dealing with a death toll that approached 750,000 you really need find a way to put some lipstick on the pig!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Catharine E. Beecher (1800 – 1878)

When inviting company, do not tempt the palate with a great variety of unhealthful dainties.”   —   Catherine Beecher

(Hey!  It’s Harriet’s sister!  She was a 19th Century American educator, and she was also an early feminine activist.  She opposed the Indian Removal Bill, because she saw how devastatingly unfair it was to native Americans.  Unfortunately, Andrew Jackson got his way, which led to a series of forced relocations of southern tribes.  Of the 46,000 or so people forcibly moved/removed nearly 16,000 perished!  That is more than a full 1/3.  Just a little more of America’s bloody history.  Surprisingly, Catharine – the correct spelling – was NOT a feminist.  But, she was a very cool lady, and is brand new to the Cryptoquote!  So, we welcome her to the  Cryptoquote Club today.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The truth is the kindest thing we can give folks in the end.”   —   Harriet Beecher Stowe

(Of course, I’d like getting the truth in the beginning and the middle as well!  Our governments, the corporate media, and our history books, are only interested in giving us their “truth”.  But, it is possible to glean – at least some of – the truth, from all of their rigmarole, if you learn to read between the lines.  Don’t just accept all that you’re told, folks.  Ask questions.  Don’t be afraid to question authority.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.”   — Harriet Beecher Stowe

(And when all you can do is sigh, because you’re not able to cry, unsaid words and deeds can cause a part of you to die.)   — YUR
