Celebrate Steve Martin's birthday with these five intriguing flicks — Phoenix Film Festival

A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”   —   Steve Martin

(One of the masters of zany comedy of the 1970s, and on, to this day!  Many of my favorite, older SNL skits starred him.  The Czechoslovakian brothers, and Theodoric of York, and of course King Tut.  Some of those old skits are a little dated, and might not be considered “politically correct”, but they still make me laugh.   Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

A Quick Guide to Reducing Broad Shoulders – Fitness Volt

I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders.”   —   Jewish Proverb

(Another one that was surprisingly difficult for me to start.  I’m always looking for the letter E at the end of words, and there were none today.  I knew the M and the C had to be the I and the A, but it was a little hard to establish which was which.  Seeing the word ASK really got me going though.  The Celebrity Cipher was equally challenging this morning, mainly because none of the words ended in E as well.  But yer Uncle Rave prevailed.  I think – as I grow older . . . and older – I’ll settle for the lighter burden, thank you!  LOL!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Dr. Seuss: Who Was Theodor Seuss Geisel and Is His Legacy Problematic?

Today I shall behave as if this is the day I will be remembered.”   —   Dr. Seuss

(I guess we’d do good to live this way . . . every day!   But some days . . . you’re just not havin’ it.  Right?  Just do your best to be kind, or at least civil, every day.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Why Orson Welles lived a life like no other | Books | The Guardian

Ask not what you can do for your country.  Ask what’s for lunch.”   —   Orson Welles

(A playful twist of John F. Kennedy’s challenging quote from his inaugural address, from January 1961.  This was a tough cryptogram to get started.  Only two “E”s in the entire quote, and they didn’t even end any of the words.  They were just in the author’s last name.  But once I got started it went pretty quickly.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

John Boswell: Historian of gays and lesbians in Christianity

Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.”   —   John Boswell

(A very positive way of looking at our grayest season!  John Boswell was an American historian and a professor at Yale University.  He had a rather short life though, passing away at the age of 47, from complications from AIDS.  This is his first quote to be used as a Cryptoquote, from what I can see.  So we welcome John – posthumously – to the Cryptoquote Club today.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Edith Wharton (Novelist) - On This Day

There are two ways of spreading light:  to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.     Edith Wharton

(I think this a wonderfully true sentiment.  I would say that it’s probably more difficult to be “the candle”.  I think it takes much more courage, confidence and conviction to be the candle, and those folks are a special breed.  But we all have the ability to be the mirror of the candle.  We should all work to accentuate the positive.  Optimism begets optimism.  We can all do our part to eliminate – or at least suppress – negativity.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

FEVER: THE MUSIC OF PEGGY LEE | American Public Television

My wish for you, sweet happy life/may all your sorrows be gone and your heart begin to sing!”   —   Peggy Lee

(The incomparable Ms. Lee!  I’ve seen her monument at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, in L.A..  Very nice.  Seems hard to believe, but this is the first of her quotes to be used at the Cryptoquote, since I’ve been posting them.  So, we welcome Ms. Peggy Lee to the Cryptoquote Club today.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

We've all gone through almost two years of trauma': Neil Gaiman says COVID-19 has changed how people watch his play | Ents & Arts News | Sky News

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness.”   —   Neil Gaiman

(I think it would be difficult to beat this New Years wish!  No wonder people consider him a genius.  Consider this post an early New Year’s Eve wish from me too.  Even though it’s late for 12/30/22!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Ben Franklin was the country's first fame whore

Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.”   —   Benjamin Franklin

(Let’s send this quote out to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, etc.!  And to all those who profit from war.  If only the world was this simple!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
