Clue/Question:  The U.S. stopped printing the $1000 bill in 1969.  The last bill printed was the – – –

Answer:  GRAND FINALE

(Gotta love it!  We’re talking the big bucks here.  I’m not sure of the why’s, but in 1969 the U.S. government decided to stop printing the $500, $1000, $5000 and $10000 dollar bills.  Supposedly, it was to deter money laundering.  I remember sometime in the 1980s, way before the banks were electronically linked, I had a modest inheritance that I needed to move from one bank to another, and the bank gave me ten $1000 dollar bills!  That was definitely a heady day.  I got the bills deposited that same day.  There are still some of those large bills out there, but they’re pretty rare.

All of today’s clue words are already on the ralis95 clue word database.  However, all of the jumbles are coming up as new, for me.  It took me a few looks to see “lunge”.  The answer letter layout was an elegant eleven letter jumble.  At first I thought the final answer was going to be FINAL something.  But with the GEDNRA all I could come with was DANGER and GANDER!  But by dropping the E, I was able to see GRAND, and realized that the E finally belonged to FINALE!  Whatever which way you get there!

Great period piece cartoon for 1969, with the long sideburns and all.  The guy holding up that last printed $1000 bill looks a little like Geraldo Rivera.  I guess it was a very sober occasion, as the one guy is toasting it with a cup of coffee.  Fun Jumble, as usual.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
