Attack on the Capitol broken down into 24 hours in Hulu special - ABC News

Active natures are rarely melancholy; activity and sadness are incompatible.”   —   C. N. Bovee

(This one took some time getting started.  Once I settled on ARE RARELY the rest fell into place.  I don’t remember him, but apparently we’ve had a C. N. Bovee quote before.  Just as with the BLM protests, I wonder if this pandemic shutdown is partially responsible for the right-wing attack on the Capitol Building.  Folks who don’t have a job to go to have too much time on their hands!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

How Washington Irving Awakened Rip Van Winkle | by Patrick Parr | The Startup | Medium

Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortunes; but great minds rise above them.”   —   Washington Irving

(One of America’s earliest, and greatest, writers!  We know him mainly for his short stories, such as “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, but he also wrote a number of acclaimed biographies on Christopher Columbus, the prophet Muhammad, Oliver Goldsmith, and a five volume one on his namesake, George Washington.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The Paris Review - Blog Archive Escaping Samuel Johnson - The Paris Review

When calamity has been suffered, the first thing to remember is how much has been escaped.”   —   Samuel Johnson

(Hopefully, there has been something that has escaped the calamity.  I don’t think that Samuel Johnson ever experienced a massive:  hurricane, or tornado, or tsunami.  But, the quote does have a lot of merit.  If you escaped with your life, and the lives of your loved ones, you can survive most calamities.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Dolly Parton Unleashes 93 Songs to Streaming to 'Bring Some Light' Amid Pandemic | Billboard

If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”   —   Dolly Parton

(Cute and folksy sounding.  And, kind of a strange metaphor.  But, who is going to question the Queen of Country Music?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Tommy Lasorda death: Former Dodgers manager dies at 93 - Sports Illustrated

The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you.”   —   John E. Southard

(So very little on the author of this marvelous, positive quote!  He’s either a gentleman who was born in 1944 and died in 2004, a man who was born in 1945 and died in 1994, or a guy who was born in 1893 and died ? . . . sometime.  Or, he could have been – maybe still is – anyone else!  Any way, we should all strive to let go of all the hurts and slights of our lives, and concentrate on giving back to those who have been good to us.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  I read a little while ago of Tommy Lasorda’s passing.  I wouldn’t have been surprised had today’s quote come from Tommy.  I was never a Dodgers’ fan, but I definitely think he was good for the game of baseball.  A seemingly great guy, who took a chance on a kid named Mike Piazza!  As a Mets fan, I’ll always be thankful for that.     YUR

Capital is that part of wealth which is devoted to obtaining further wealth.”   —   Alfred Marshall

(A very prominent economist, and also a proponent of the working class.  He was a professor, at Cambridge University, who taught John Maynard Keynes.  This is the first of his quotes to make it to the Cryptoquote, so today we welcome Professor Marshall to the Cryptoquote Club!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

James Feibleman Quotes, Famous Quotes by James Feibleman | Quoteswave

We are at once the beneficiaries and the victims of our great technology.  What man makes remakes man.”   —   James Feibleman

(James passed on in 1987, during the age of the VHS tape players.  Remember:  “Be Kind, Rewind”?  Life was a bit more manageable back then.  No available internet yet, so no Wi-Fi or blue tooth.  No widely available cell phones.  But, they did have beepers/pagers!  We are virtual slaves to our technology today.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Today in Baseball History: Casey Stengel fined for appearing in a beer ad - MLB | NBC Sports

There are three things you can do in a baseball game.  You can win, you can lose, or it can rain.”   —   Casey Stengel

(Great quote, but we saw this exact quote about 2 and 1/2 years ago!  Boo!  Hiss!  Too soon to be rerun.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
