55 Chinese Proverbs, Sayings and Quotes

When there are no great tigers in the deep mountains, even a monkey can become king.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(I’m sure that there are some who could make this a current political joke.  Donald Trump was some kind of feral beast, and – the majority – viewed him as a threat to mankind.  Which is why in 2020 the mantra was:  Anybody-But-Trump!  None of my Democratic friends really wanted Joe Biden, but . . . ABT!  Joe Biden is definitely no monkey though.  He’s been dealt a really crappy hand with:  the pandemic, supply chain issues, the crisis in Ukraine, record wildfires and floods, weekly mass shootings, an economy that was probably overdue for a “correction”, and an opposition that continues to insist the election was “stolen”, just to name a few.  He’s in better physical shape than his predecessor, but he is pushing 80!  And, that’s the oldest of any person ever elected to the most demanding job in the world.  So, for those who insist on attacking Mr. Biden . . . give it a rest.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

55 Chinese Proverbs, Sayings and Quotes

A single conversation across the table with a wise man is worth a month’s study of books.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(I like this quote!  But who’s to say that the wise man is actually any wiser than you?  And, even wise men/women come with their own biases and preconceptions.  So, the answer he/she gives you might not jibe with the answer you were expecting/looking for.  So, go with a combination of both!  Just don’t trust all that you read on Facebook and Twitter!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(I guess there has to be a lot of middle ground between great and feeble.  Thankfully.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(There should be another great, or perhaps a strong, before the word “wills”.  We all have will, maybe not necessarily free will, but some form of will, all the same.  This was a fairly challenging solve.  No THE, A, or I to help us out.  We don’t see “feeble” that often.  I was leaning towards the W being the E early on, but it wasn’t until I figured out “Chinese Proverb” that it really got going.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(This is something we all should bear in mind.  We need to provide our children with a good moral framework, but we’re all products of our own experiences.  Everyone needs to take their own unique chances, so they can make – and learn from – their own mistakes.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago.  The second best time is now.”   —   Chinese Proverb

(Been quite a while since we’ve had any sayings or proverbs, let alone a Chinese proverb.  And, it’s a great one.  It’s been a while since I planted a tree, but I’ve got five, in my yard alone, that I can take credit for.  Everyone should plant at least one tree in their lives.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

(Flowery proclamations cannot replace leading by example!  This one took a little effort to solve.  I suspected the FYI was THE, and the FP was TO.  This led to the NOT, and eventually to Chinese Proverb.  We haven’t had any kind of proverbs, or sayings, or “origin unknown” in quite a while.  Maybe we’ll start to see some more.  They make for a nice change of pace.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
