Clue/Question:  Charles Schulz drew Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown – – –

Answer:  JUST FOR KICKS

(Happy hereafter birthday to America’s most iconic cartoonist!  It didn’t dawn on me – initially – that it was his birthday, until I did the Celebrity Cipher.  I always do the Jumble first.  More often than not they go with a celebrity – living or not – whose birthday it is.  For guys like Jeff I’m sure that it’s practically a sacred day of observance!  Even though he died more than 22 years ago, you can still see the comic strip “Peanuts” in a number of newspapers.  And you can still find the television holiday specials somewhere on TV.  Ironically, today’s Celebrity Cipher speaks of learning to not discuss religion – among other things – yet a major scene in “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is heavy with religion.  Maybe he learned that lesson later in life?

We have all classic Jumble clue words today, with all new jumbles!  The only one I had to look at twice was “loclsr”, but I saw “scroll” quickly enough.  The answer letter layout was another terrific twelve letter jumble.  Beautifully cryptic, but for me the “J” kinda gave it away.

In today’s cartoon, Mr. Schulz speaks of Charlie Brown’s optimism, but I see it even more as Lucy being the tiger who can’t change her stripes.  Maybe even to the extent of The Scorpion and the Frog.  Yep, I think Lucy would pull away that football even if it killed her!  All in all, I think that Jeff chose the perfect hero to emulate.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Apologies for missing the bigger picture, folks!  Thanks to my newspaper NOT being physically delivered on Saturday anymore, I did not even see that this is the 100th anniversary of Charles M. Schulz’s birth!  I go straight to the three puzzles – that I’m forced to print out – and then close down the window, because if I leave it up for long it slows down the computer terribly.  I just came back to read the Funnies, and saw the multitude of tributes to the great man.  My paper carries 17 comic strips and panels, and of them 14 paid tribute to Mr. Schulz.  15 of 18 if you include the Jumble!  Great going, guys!   —   YUR

YORK Peppermint Patties Miniatures - 25 lbs. | Bulk Candy | HERSHEY'S

All you need is love.  But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”   —   Charles Schulz

(Hmm!  I wonder if his character Peppermint Patty hails from York, Pennsylvania???  LOL!  Definitely one of my favorites.  I have a bag of them – the minis – in my snack drawer.  I don’t eat them everyday, and I try to limit myself to one when I do.  This was a very quick solve today.  I think the Celebrity Cipher was actually a bit tougher!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

All you need is love.  But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”   —   Charles M. Schulz

(If now and then means . . . at least once a day!  My sweet tooth can’t be satisfied by fruit, or licorice, or some tangy candy.  It wants chocolate!  Right now, my family is into the Oreo Thins.  I’ve heard some people complain that they’re “unnecessary”, but I totally disagree.  They are proportionately much more like the original Oreos, whereas the Double Stuffs are clearly the same chocolate cookie, but with twice the filling.  This makes them a little too sweet, and not chocolaty enough for me.  The newer Thins give you the original taste experience in just a thinner, crisper format.  And, with this new format, I don’t feel compelled to twist the cookie apart, and eat one side naked and the other side with the cream.  I was never one to eat just the cream, and then the two naked cookies!  The extra bonus is I can be satisfied with eating 3 or 4 of the Thins, which is a whole lot less – calorie-wise – than 3 or 4 of the originals.  And, fuhgeddaboud the Double Stuffs!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Decorate your home.  It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is.”   —   Charles M. Schulz

(I think I’d rather have the more interesting life, than the well appointed home.  I say Screw the Joneses!  They’re all a bunch of boring schmucks, anyway.  Be well and do good friends.)   —   YUR  😉

I have a new philosophy.  I’m only going to dread one day at a time.”   — Charles M. Schulz

(In the context of the comics’ Charlie Brown, this line elicits both pathos and humor.  Our lovable loser is just trying to cope the best he can.  But, when you apply it to real life it brings to mind the tortured minds of people like Jared Lee Loughner and Seung Hui Cho.  They, apparently, dreaded every single day, of their later lives at least.  Picking up on, and keying in on, all the vitriol and negative aspects of today’s sensory overloaded world.  And, resenting – and just not understanding – other people’s happiness and success.  Why not ME??? Their sense of hopelessness driving a feeling of utter desperation, until they finally reach some kind of horrible breaking point.  There is still plenty of good in this world.  Despite all the tragedy and craziness that seem to assault our senses, non-stop, there are still reasons to be hopeful and thankful.  I think the stronger of us need to do much more to convey a sense of optimism to those who are clearly struggling.  Many people do need professional help, but we need to do our part as well.)   — YUR

PS.  I’d much prefer showing a picture of Charlie Brown, but there are too many copyright issues.

Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today.  It is already tomorrow in Australia.”   — Charles Schulz

(Besides, everyone knows the world is coming to an end on November the 11th, 2011.) ;~) YUR
