“Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away.” — Barbara de Angelis
(I’m not crazy about quotes that reinforce stereotypes, people. I’m not so thin skinned that I’d let this quote offend me, but I see it as a female chauvinistic statement. And, not that this is a hateful statement, in any way, but I’ve noticed that the word misogyny is thrown around a lot, but you rarely hear the word misandry. The door does swing both ways you know. Certain words, or epithets, seem to be used to put people down, and sometimes even demonize them, as a way of suppressing differing points of view . The word anti-Semite comes to mind. Certainly there are intolerances, and outright hatreds, of just about any group of people, whether it’s because of religious, ethnicity, nationality, what have you reasons. All forms of hatred and intolerance are detrimental, and should be unacceptable. But, you almost never hear words like anti-Gentile, or anti-Islam, or anti-Hindu, etc., etc.. You do hear, more and more, the term Islamophobe, but like the word homophobe it’s really a bit of a misnomer. Anything attached to phobe or phobia is really a fear, not a hatred. You can argue that most hatred is driven by fear, and that fear is driven by a kind of ignorance. But even so, there is still somewhat of a leap, from fear to hatred. While racism, sexism, and all the other negative isms need to be remedied from human existence, we need to be more evenhanded about it. We shouldn’t be using certain words as a combination of crutch and cudgel, without considering the other person’s point of view. Historical reasons aside, it’s just not fair. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
