Answer: GUNG-“HOE“
(I’d call this answer more of an . . . earthy pun. Not necessarily stinky. The phrase gung ho was adopted by the U.S. Marines, from the Chinese phrase gōnghé, which means ‘to work together’. How the meaning got changed to ‘overly enthusiastic’ – almost a battle cry – is just another example us doing whatever we want with other languages. There was an old song from the 1960s called “Down In The Boondocks” that really makes no sense when you realize that the original bundók is a Filipino/Tagolog word meaning mountain. Down in the mountains??? OUT in the boondocks is fine though, often shortened to the boonies.
All four of today’s clue words are on the ralis95 clue word database. However, all four jumbles are coming up as new, for me. I was able to see them all immediately. The answer letter layout was a slight seven letter jumble. I think between the quotation marks, the clue/question, and the cartoon that the final answer came to most folks pretty quickly.
Nice cartoon of the couple starting their backyard vegetable garden. It’s kinda early in the season for that, but with global warming changing the narrative I guess you could start your digging. I’ve seen a few things starting to come up already, and one of my wife’s doctors said that he saw a forsythia bush starting to bud already. That is way more than a month ahead of schedule. Maybe the aliens can save us! What? We just shot down yet another UFO? Well, forget about the aliens helping us NOW! LOL! Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
PS. On this day in 1923 the first Black professional basketball team “The Renaissance” was organized. In 1957, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded in New Orleans. And in 1970, the New York Stock Exchange admitted its first Black member, Joseph Searles. Wow! That last one surprised me. Celebrate Black History month! — YUR
