Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiled! – 03/13/21

However... WORLD'S FOREMOST AUTHORITY Irwin Corey Dies @ 102 - Boy Culture : Covering Hot Men, Gay Issues, Celebrities, Movies, Music & More

Some geniuses at The Journal News, a Gannett newspaper, decided to omit/remove the Sunday Cryptoquote from this week’s edition.  They squished the Sunday Jumble until it’s barely legible, and added something called Boggle Brainbusters, but NO Cryptoquote!    Possibly this was just an oversight, as this is the very first week where they’ve halted delivery of a Saturday paper, and are trying to squeeze a little more into the Sunday edition, but they still found room for the Sudoku!

If this irks you as much as it does me please voice your displeasure – and ask them to reinstate the Sunday Cryptoquote – to the following:

The John Wayne Classic Mia Farrow Thinks Is Her Biggest Career Mistake

Answer:  WRITE” ‘EM COWBOY

(A wonderful Jumble pun!  Especially if you enjoy Westerns, like I do.  But getting this final answer was no ride down a primrose path.  At least not for me.  My problem came from my cheap newspaper, The Journal News, a Gannett newspaper, greatly reducing the size of today’s Sunday Jumble.  Even though I actually wrote down the apostrophe before the middle/two letter word I kinda spaced a bit, and thought it had to be an actual two letter word.  Since my first inkling for the first word was WRITE, the second word had to be BY.  But this left me with MCOEOW!  I don’t think you can make a regular word from those letters.  So, I rewrote the answer letters and tried again.  This time sussing out COWBOY first!  Then, from the RMTIEEW I checked off the WRITE, and was left with ME.  THEN I saw that silly little apostrophe, and switched things around to get ‘EM!

All of today’s clue words were as familiar to me as a John Wayne movie.  Four of the jumbles did come up as new for me.  But we’ve definitely seen both “mursee” and “lwwiol” in previous Jumbles.  A relatively modest thirteen letter answer letter layout, for a Sunday.  But it was deceptively cryptic.

Fine cartoon of the American movie icon, John Wayne, reading a script for “True Grit” in his agent’s office.  The Duke wasn’t exactly the most progressive of individuals, so it is a little surprising that he would have a woman as his agent.  And, this would’ve been way back in 1969, pretty much at the very beginning of the Women’s Liberation Movement.  “I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!”  That line alone was worth the price of admission!  Maybe it’s the writer of “True Grit”‘s screenplay, Marguerite Roberts.  Yeah.  Let’s go with that.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
