Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 03/06/22

John C. Calhoun: War Hawk - Shannon Selin

True consistency, that of the prudent and the wise, is to act in conformity with circumstances.”   —   John C. Calhoun

(I really have no idea what J.C. is trying to say here!  He was the 7th Vice President of the United States, under the 6th President, John Quincy Adams, and the 7th President, Andrew Jackson.  He was a big proponent of “states rights”, which largely was about slavery.  But he was far from being alone with his views, and today’s revisionists like to dismiss the fact that the United States of America were largely “united” in name only.  With the country still being so new, the vast majority of Americans identified more with their individual states, than with the grander idea of being “American”.  But, as with most history, it’s more preferable to demonize the vanquished while glorifying the victors.  Such is the way of the world.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I didn’t know that slaver John Caldwell Calhoun was vice president for two of our presidents.

    Thanks, Unc !

Until I solved this Cryptoquote I didn’t know/remember that either. Most of us don’t pay too much attention to the V.P.s throughout history. Just mainly the ones who went on to become President. They say that at least 1700 members of Congress held slaves at some point in their lives. When you consider that in those first 72 years of our existence we went from 13 colony/states to 34 that is a pretty staggering number! But it was just so common and accepted at the time. Much to the chagrin of today’s sensibilities.

GREAT to see you’re still with us, lwc! You had me worried there for a bit. — YUR
