Curtain Raiser

Wes covers a multitude of issues with his shotgun approach. Many things that you’re NOT going to see/hear on our corporate media. He cares! We all should. — YUR

Outside Rational Discourse, Colltalers

A Russian troop buildup at Ukraine’s border and a U.S.-led rush to war are our newest global nightmares. But concerns about such a tragedy foretold are still to reach the White House. And old foes Covid, climate change have not let out yet, and neither has the national debt, now topping $30 trillion.
But America’s biggest woe now is ignorance: as in a butterfly preservation center forced to close by thugs who believe it’s a sex trafficking facility! And in Israel, an Amnesty report on its “apartheid state” shocked, shocked authorities just as its army killed a Palestinian man holding a U.S. passport.
We hit the ground running in New York where the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists presented its newest issue of the so-called Doomsday Clock. We’re now at the short distance of 100 seconds to midnight, which marks the end of civilization as we…

Answer:  DRY AS A BONE

(I love the Jumble puns from ancient idioms!    Hopefully, they are helping to keep these idioms alive.  So many of them are just phrases that we heard our parents, and grandparents, say repeatedly, and we just kind of accepted them, without question.  I remember telling my daughter that she was as brown as a berry!  And, she was like . . . huh?!  What kind of berry is brown???  I had to admit – I don’t know – it’s just an old saying.  A lot of our old idioms are a bit . . . idiotic.

All basic clue words today!  Nothing new.  However, all four of the jumbles are coming up as new, for me.  Three of them I got immediately, but “wnrado” took two looks before I saw “onward”.  The answer letter layout made for a tenacious ten letter jumble.  I thought it disguised the final answer very nicely.  It took me a couple of looks.  From the cartoon, I was getting hot, more than dry.

Great desert scene cartoon.  It sure looks hot!  I’m wondering if this is the remains of a mosasaur?  Possibly an ichthyosaur?  Maybe I should ask an eight year old.  They all seem to love dinosaurs.  Whatever it was I’m glad that they’re not around anymore!  There is more than enough in the sea to freak me out.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Happy Birthday to Joey Ryan of The Milk Carton Kids!  (These guys make great harmonies, and can be very funny too!  Someone described them as Simon & Garfunkel meet The Smothers Brothers.)

Cryptoquote Spoiler – 02/08/22

Anna Jameson Biography, Life, Interesting Facts

Childhood sometimes does pay a second visit to man; youth never.”   —   Anna Jameson

(Ms. Jameson was a very accomplished and forward thinking woman of the 19th Century.  She had a wide range of interests, including early feminism.  I like how she uses the word “man” in the general sense, as in the family of man.  Too many of today’s feminists take offense to, and seem to want to erase the word “man” from the current lexicon.  I don’t think that is helping anyone.  This appears to be the first of Anna Jameson’s quotes to be used at the Cryptoquote, since I’ve been posting these spoilers.  So, we welcome Ms. Jameson to the Cryptoquote Club today!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
