Jumble Spoiler – 10/16/21

Clue/Question:  The school’s football field was brand new, and everyone was excited to – – –

Answer:  KICK THINGS OFF

(Europeans – and pretty much the rest of the world – are always a little bit peeved by American’s – United States and Canada – use of the name Football.  To them Soccer is Football, or Futbol.  Granted Soccer/Futbol is the much older sport, and players are supposed to use just their feet – and their heads – to stop or advance the ball.  The only exception being the goalie, who is allowed to pick up and throw the ball.  On occasion, the other players can/do handle the ball during a throw-in, which happens when an opposing player kicks the ball out of bounds.  But I believe their throw-ins have to take place out of bounds.  The referees watch the player’s feet, to make sure he/she didn’t step in bounds on the throw in.  Anyway, as a result of only advancing the ball via your feet, scoring a goal can seemingly take forever, and final scores are typically very low.  Conversely, in American Football, players either run with the ball in their hands, or one player throws the ball to another via the forward pass, and occasionally the lateral.  The only times an American Football player actually kicks the ball is when they either punt, kick a field goal, or kick an extra point after a touchdown.  And, typically, those functions are handled by two specialist; the Punter and the Kicker.  The non-specialist players cannot advance the ball by kicking it.  It has to be caught or carried.  I think this is one big reason why Soccer/Futbol fans don’t like us calling our Football “Football”!  We use our hands much more than our feet!  Also, in American Football each team’s players are divided into Offense and Defense, and they’re generally not on the field at the same time.  It’s one team’s Offense versus the other team’s Defense.  The Defense will hit and tackle the other team’s Offense players to prevent them from advancing/scoring.  In Soccer/Futbol every player plays a combination of Offense and Defense, and you’re not supposed to hit, trip, or tackle the opposing player, or you get called for a penalty.  You have to intercept, or take away the ball – cleanly – from your opponent with your feet.  It results in a non-stop kind of action, but as I said earlier there’s relatively little scoring.  Americans like lots of scoring, and of course lots of hitting!  American Football is inherently violent.

All of today’s clue words are very familiar to Jumble fans.  Three of the jumbles appear to be new, but we’ve definitely seen “sokki” in the past.  I was able to unscramble all of them without trouble.  The answer letter layout was a rousing thirteen letter jumble.  I thought that it was wonderfully cryptic.  I knew that the third word of the final answer had to be OFF.  There weren’t enough spaces for KICKING in the middle spot, but KICK fit very nicely in for the first word.  That’s when THINGS made sense!
