(I’m sure they both had lofty goals.  They might have even been trying to one up the other.  These guys are more like extreme hikers.  They’re not like the people who scale the face of mountains with their bare hands, or anything.

All familiar old clue words.  But all the jumbles appear to be new.  No stumpers.  The answer letter layout was a straight eight letter jumble.  Perfectly cryptic.  But this was still a quick solve.
