“To be in love is to touch with a lighter hand. In yourself you stretch, you are well.” — Gwendolyn Brooks
(I know I always considered being in love to be a huge positive. I’m guessing this is a line from one of her poems. Does anyone know for sure? Ms. Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize, way back in 1950, for her poem “Annie Allen”. And, among her many honors, she was Poet Laureate of Illinois for 32 years. And today she is being inducted into the Cryptoquote Club! The honors just keep on coming! Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

I read a little about Gwendolyn brooks.
Her family upbringing sounds a little like mine. Most of the men in my family were high school graduates with good-paying union jobs, while many of the women were college graduates.
My family put a high value on education. As I got older, I realized that my grandfather considered education as the best protection he could give his five daughters. For the most part it paid off.
The grandkids didn’t have a lot of choice, either. His generation and before didn’t have a lot of formal education. It’s apparent to me now that he wanted to change the family’s prospects for the future.
