“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” — St. Augustine

Happy birthday to Emerson Hart, of Tonic!
Gee, Unc !
What did St Augustine do to you ?
Never agreed with “original sin”. — YUR

That caught me off-guard !
I’ll have to do some study and get back with you ! ?
A lot of the dogma is hard to swallow, but I was always amused by his famous prayer, “Oh Lord, make me chaste, but not yet!”
LOL, hal! The best thing about the early Catholics is that they hadn’t yet forced their priests, etc., etc. into celibacy! I truly “believe” that if they were allowed to marry – as in earlier times – that they would attract a much larger number of quality people into the priesthood. And, consequentially, there would be FAR less pedophilia, and other forms of sexual abuse, by priests. AND, I also “believe” the problems would be decidedly lessened if they allowed women to become priests. And, of course, the women priests should be allowed to marry also.
Why does the Catholic church choose to be so obtuse? — YUR

Unc, be careful ! I’m sure some readers are Catholics. I wouldn’t want them to come after you, even though I agree with you.
I recall reading that early Church priests were married then that changed, but I never understood why. I did hear that some priests in those early days began treating church property as personal property to use as they pleased, but that might be an apocryphal story.
Maybe someone knows for sure.
That is essentially the reason that I heard as well, lwc. But, I don’t worry about offended Catholics. My wife, and many other Catholics, have many issues with the church. Critics might call them “cafeteria Catholics”, but they like to think of themselves as progressive Catholics. — YUR
