Jumble Spoiler – 03/25/21

Visual Description: Glass and Steel Skyscraper

Giving us: RPSHUHIGE

Clue/Question: The company’s executives with offices on the top floor were:

(WordPress has gone and done it again, but this time there does not seem to be a workaround. At least I can’t find it. They have removed the Classic mode, and have made their Block mode mandatory. Nothing about this Block mode is intuitive to me. There is only a very cursory Tool Bar, and I can’t work this way.

The Classic mode was very user friendly, and I don’t understand: why they are changing what always worked, and why WordPress could not have somehow communicated the changes with us, the users. I guess it’s true, you get what you pay for! LOL! I’m just getting too old for this crap. I’m sorry to say that this looks like it is the end of Uncle Rave’s Wordy Weblog.

Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

Terrible news, UR. You’ve done everything you can, I guess. It’s been great. If they bring back the Classic Mode, I hope you’ll pick it up again. All the best, Hal

So sorry to hear this, uncle rave. We will miss you. Thank you for bringing a bright spot to my life every day. I especially appreciate and admire your willingness to speak out on issues of the nation and the world that have nothing to do with Jumble. I haven’t always agreed with you, but I think what you were doing was a service to your readers.
As The Most Interesting Man in the World said, “Stay thirsty, my friend.”

When did this happen? Now that I finally got down to my own million workarounds simply to emulate the simplicity of what was before, they’ve changed it again? I know WP is mostly driven by volunteers but I guess even they get left out of the loop sometimes when the higher-up engineers decide that they know better and go ahead and shove some big change like this down our throats while we sleep. Maybe we should message Steven Bauer which is a great guy and know a lot about WP. This can’t be happening to me, not now, not again. Colltales may follow the Uncle on our way to the Dodo (and the rotary phone, perhaps).

I so looked forward to reading you every morning. Sad news you will no longer be posting.

    Say it ain’t so Unc!

Still, if there is no workaround, just know you’ll be greatly missed. The jumble won’t be quite the same without you.

    With gratitude,

I’m so sorry to see you go. I always enjoy your commentary, not to mention your answers ! Hope you’re able to come back ! Anne

That’s strange, Yur. I still publish my blog in Classic mode…..

I’m quite proficient in Block mode too, but I much prefer the simplicity of Classic. It would be my pleasure to guide you through the process of publishing in Block if you’re interested.

I’d suggest you uninstall WordPress and then reinstall it from the app store. I had trouble with the WP program on my iPad after receiving an update a few weeks ago. I deleted/reinstalled and the bug was gone! Just an fyi: you will need to log back in to WP when you reinstall so make sure you know your username/password.

Hi, Wes! Read: “How WordPress Forces Free Bloggers to become Paying Bloggers” below Blog, What it Is, and Word Games. I laid it out there. Us free bloggers seem to be expendable! — YUR

There’s an outside chance, Anne. At this time I don’t know what to do, but hopefully I can find a way back. Thank you. — YUR

  23. 23 unclerave March 27, 2021 at 5:19 pm

I don’t access WordPress via an app, Mike. I’m old school and use a desk top, so there’s nothing I can delete/uninstall, and then reinstall. Are you a paying WordPress customer? Because I’m not. — YUR

  26. 26 unclerave March 27, 2021 at 5:29 pm

Thank you, Cathy! I always enjoyed putting them out there. I don’t know if I can do it any way but the way I’ve always done it. I don’t embrace “New AND Improved” like I once did. It’s almost as if someone turned off a light switch, leaving me totally in the dark. — YUR

  27. 27 Mike March 27, 2021 at 8:36 pm

I am a paying customer, but the editors should still be the same.

Try this: Start a new post in Block. In top left is a “+” symbol. Click it, and in the search box type “classic.” That should give you the Classic toolbar that you’re familiar with. Hopefully that’ll be enough to keep you posting!

  28. 28 museoffire March 27, 2021 at 10:34 pm

Bad news, indeed. I rarely Jumble but always Cryptoquote. I enjoyed reading your bios of the authors. I hope you can continue in some form in the future.

  29. 29 Mike March 28, 2021 at 1:27 am

How do you not have an iPad or tablet? OMG — are you still using a modem???

  30. 30 michelinewalker March 28, 2021 at 9:55 am

The block editor is not user-friendly. Gone are the beautiful posts of old.

  31. 31 Elsa March 28, 2021 at 11:34 pm

I’m so sorry you had to stop this entertaining and informative weblog! I hope WordPress improves their customer service, it sounds awful and user unfriendly. New isn’t always improved, like our new cable box not having a clock, and WordPress destroying customer interface

  32. 32 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 10:58 am

I played around with the + last week, and the Classic toolbar did come back . . . briefly, but then disappeared. But, I will give it another shot, now that I’ve calmed down. Thanks, Mike. — YUR

  33. 33 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 11:00 am

Thank you, Muse. I AM going to give it another try. Hopefully, I will prevail. — YUR

  34. 34 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 11:07 am

Just a matter of preference, Mike. I like the feel of a real keyboard. And, I don’t care for working on those smaller screens. These old eyes need a full screen monitor. I squint too much as it is. And, no – wiseguy – I don’t use a modem. We have a router and wifi throughout the house. I even use a wireless keypad and mouse! LOL! — YUR
PS. I also don’t like how there is no toolbar for Comments now. So lame!

  35. 35 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 11:08 am

It’s all a ploy to make the free bloggers into paying bloggers, Micheline. — YUR

  36. 36 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 11:10 am

You said it, Elsa! One of the best old sayings was always: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Too many have forgotten that. — YUR

  37. 37 michelinewalker March 30, 2021 at 12:00 pm

Unclerave, it is designed for people who know computer science. Most bloggers don’t, which is not ignorance. We know enough.

  38. 38 unclerave March 30, 2021 at 12:37 pm

While never a programmer, I did work in the Technology department at my last position at the bank that I worked for. (Where I worked for 24+ years) I actually used to assist OTHERS with their computer issues, and I also used to troubleshoot for the techie boys. Most of them hate dealing with the end users! The end users were required to go through me, because I could – usually – ascertain whether their problem was an actual system’s problem, or something that they were doing incorrectly. More often it was the latter! If I determined that the issue was an actual system’s problem I would then refer it to the techs. I had a very good knowledge of a few of the systems that were in use, and I was always good with Windows settings and diagnostics. The big problem IS that things are always changing, and since I’m no longer *in the biz*, I’m no longer on the ball . . . like I used to be. Even the relatively simple programs, like Word and Excel, have changed SO much over the years that I can longer say that I am “proficient” in them. Change for change’s sake is usually how these things come off, but usually the bottom line is . . . the bottom line. The Block Editor is cheaper for WordPress! — YUR

  39. 39 Wheeler March 30, 2021 at 12:46 pm

If this is a money issue, could Jeff and David intervene on your behalf?

  40. 40 Ken March 30, 2021 at 4:04 pm

A short story that may help: When I worked for the Military Sealift Command, in Communications (Radio Shack), the main part of our job was fixing the mess the Government made with faulty programs, equipment & lack of sufficient bandwidth. This was frustrating/maddening on many occasions. If we were blessed with a good crew/team, when we figured out a solution there was great joy!!^
Kinda-like the NCAA “Big Dance”, as good as they are individually, The Zags, if not in team sync, “forgit ’bout it”…. I know you Sabe…….

However you carry on; The Best to You***¥…

  41. 41 michelinewalker March 30, 2021 at 5:40 pm

Usually, that is the bottom line. and there comes a point when one can no longer deal with the new gadgets or better editor. For instance, I cannot use my smartphone and fear using it because I may not be able to hang up. I have learned to use the Block Editor, but I cannot post good images anymore. I have been asked to sell my posts. Who would be interested in my material? I would lose my readers. It is so unfortunate. Micheline

  42. 42 michelinewalker March 31, 2021 at 9:09 am

Unclerave, You might be able to switch. To find your colours, go to the arrow pointing down. Your picture will stay above if you do not want your writing to slide up. Symbols are under the emoji. Your categories and tags are under parameters (far right). It is best to use the parameters before you write, your text, but it will. If you press Publish, you have not yet published. All can be reviewed. I was forced to switch to the block editor. At first, it was a nightmare and I still have problems, but the tips above can help. There are more tips, but it’s one thing at a time. Good luck. Regards, Micheline

  43. 43 unclerave March 31, 2021 at 11:37 am

Jeff offered a couple of years ago, but I told him no thanks, Wheeler. I am going to attempt the stupid Bock Editor a little later, using Mike and Micheline’s suggestions. Thanks. — YUR

I’ll give it the old college try, Ken. Thanks. — YUR

Thank, Micheline. Between Mike and you maybe I’ll be able to post something. — YUR

  47. 47 michelinewalker April 3, 2021 at 11:15 am

I was forced to switch, but managed to do so. I’m still learning: symbols under the emoji. Of all things. I made a discovery yesterday. It takes a while. My best to you. Micheline

We can’t let all those young scallywags keep us down, Micheline! Keep the faith, sister! — YUR

  49. 49 lwc April 17, 2021 at 8:33 pm

    I agree, Unc !

It’s so annoying when online services change their formats; and, the reasons and for the justification for the changes aren’t obvious.

Please, leave our stuff alone. We’re too old for this !

  50. 50 unclerave April 18, 2021 at 3:08 pm

Atta boy, lwc! Incremental change, that makes things easier, is great. But sudden change, that makes things tougher, is a big No Bueno! — YUR

  51. 51 michelinewalker April 22, 2021 at 12:10 pm

No we can’t. We’ll find our way.Thank you, Unclerave

  52. 52 Willow Croft April 24, 2021 at 9:51 am

Can you let me know if this works? Because it works for me. Go to “write post”. Where it says “Start Writing or type / to choose a block” click on that once, and then type in the “/” symbol. A list should pop up, and then it says “Classic”. Click on the “Classic” and it should pop up like it was before.

  53. 53 unclerave April 24, 2021 at 10:52 am

I’ve been able to access the Classic editor from Mike’s instructions from a few weeks ago, Willow. It’s a little more labor intensive than the old way, and occasionally it acts up when I’m trying to highlight my text. The editor disappears for some reason, and doesn’t come back until I click around a few times. And, because I don’t really type, I hunt and peck, I don’t always know what’s happening on the screen. I assume that what I’m typing is coming up as intended. But occasionally it has jumped down a line on me, and that upsets the editor. If that happened in the good old days I could just place the cursor in front of the errant line and use the Backspace button. Now, I have to cut and paste the wayward line back to where it belongs! And, I don’t care for the fact that once I start typing the right side options, like Categories and Tags, disappears. I did a quick dry run using your suggestions, starting from My Home, then Write Blog Post, and then typing the / in the Start Writing line. I was able to choose the Classic editor that way too. It looks pretty much the same as the way I’ve been doing it from Posts, and Add Post, but I will now give your way a try with today’s spoilers. Hopefully, it will be a little less wonky than what I’ve been doing. Thanks for the suggestion, Willow. — YUR 😃

  54. 54 unclerave April 25, 2021 at 10:24 am

Hi, Willow! Your way is just a slightly different way to get to where I’d been going the last few weeks. It is still a little wonky, and I really miss the simplicity and ease of the old Classic editor. But Thanks still. — YUR
