Gideon Sundback's Invention of the Zipper - America Comes Alive

Visual Description:  What we now take for granted.

OTRIA  =  RATIO,  UDEFG  =  FUDGE,  CESKTO  =  SOCKET,  CANLYU  =  LUNACY   —   Giving us:  ATFDESETNA

Clue/Question:  When Gideon Sundback showed how his zipper worked, people were – – –

When Was the Zipper Invented? – @carry

Answer: FASTENATED

(Yes, yes.  It is a real groaner of a pun.  And, that’s why we love it!  The zipper really did revolutionize clothing, of all kinds.  And, today they are so ubiquitous.  I’m certainly no engineer, but I was thinking that the semi forerunner of the zipper – the hook and eye closure – is also the basis of Velcro.  The biggest differences being that Velcro doesn’t use metal – they use Nylon – and there are hundreds of these tiny hooks and eyes, or loops.

There were no new clue words today.  Three of the jumbles appear to be new, but we’ve definitely seen “udefg” before.  Besides, there’s no hiding “fudge” from a chocolate lover.  The answer letter layout was a tantalizing ten letter jumble.  I thought it was nicely cryptic.  The quotation marks and the hyphen were my biggest clues.

Another fine period piece cartoon from our buddy.  Between 1914 – 1917.  He drew a very nice likeness of Mr. Sundback.  When you actually stop, and watch how zippers work, they really are fascinating.

Covid-19 seems to be making a strong comeback, so please take all the necessary precautions, folks.  Practice “social distancing”.  Wear the masks, when in public places.  And, wash your hands frequently.  Don’t touch your face until you’ve done so.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Early voting starts tomorrow in New York state.  In some places it’s already in effect.  Don’t wait until the last moment.  Get out the vote!

It didn’t send me to LUNACY, but ARIOT is a word in some dictionaries, meaning “out of control.” However, the other word has many more hits, by a RATIO of about 10,000-to-1!

    UR,

I was surprised/disappointed that I could not recall Mr. Sundback’s name and the fact that he not only patented the Zipper, as we know it today, but also the machine to manufacture it!!*… A rather
brilliant & “FASTEN-ATing” man…Sweden & America should be very proud of him and his fellow engineers☆…….

I figured OTRIA would start with O,I or A instead of R for “RATIO”…Silly guy^×…

    So looooong…….k

You are such a clever guy, hal! And, maybe you and Ken should get together to work on some of the jumbles! LOL! — YUR
