Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/17/20

Satchel Paige baseball card sells for more than $66,000 - al.com

Airplanes may kill you, but they ain’t likely to hurt you.”   —   Satchel Paige

(This one was a fairly tough solve.  No single letter words, and no words that end in E.  And, it always takes me a long time to go to AIN’TMy Momma raised me right!  LOL!  Ole Satchel was as good of a philosopher/pontificator as he was a baseball pitcher.  He certainly did love the game!   Hey!  Today is Boog Powell’s 79th birthday.  He was one of my boyhood heroes!  Happy birthday, Boog!   Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 08/17/20

Clue/Question:  When the new horse track opened, they were – – –

Apron - Santa Anita Park

Answer:  OFF TO THE RACES

(“New” race track???  Is this supposed to be a period piece?  Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t remember the last time they opened a new race track.  If anything, they seem to be closing, for various reasons.  I love horse racing, but I’m not blind to the seamier side of the sport.  Too many of the owners, and trainers, just see $ signs, and don’t care enough about the welfare of these magnificent creatures.  The governing bodies vary from state to state, and too often they are less than diligent.  A lot of animal rights groups want to ban the sport completely, and I can see their point of view, but I’d rather the sport/industry was just better regulated.

No maiden clue words today.  They have all already earned a spot on the ralis95 clue word database.  A little surprising is that all of the jumbles appear to be new.  For some reason, it took me a little effort to see “effort”.  The answer letter layout was a top line ten letter jumble.  Not obvious, but the final answer slots made this another no-brainer for me.

Fine race track cartoon.  The guy has his – hopefully – winning tickets in hand.  And, his wife/lady friend has her program in her hand.  I wish them luck, and pray that all the horses are healthy and safe.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
