“Every man is dishonest who lives upon the labor of others, no matter if he occupies a throne.” — Robert Ingersoll

“The liberty of man is not safe in the hands of any church.”
Mr Ingersoll’s statement is about as true as anything I’ve read in a while.
I don’t believe there’s a religion on Earth that wouldn’t enslave all of mankind had it the power to do so.
UR,
One of my former professions had me away for up to eight months and led me to various Christian Churches around the world. The “liberty” I found in them was for eternity in Christ Jesus!!!…….I have a strong sense this guy could use some saving if he’s still alive^
(I didn’t even desire to look up his bio)
Byyyyy
I think the Western religions have been doing their best to make it so, lwc! — YUR
UR,
One of the best things about your site is the ability to express your opinions freely without
concern of censorship… Unless, of course, one is spewing unabridged rot-gut!! (kinda sounds like Founding Fathers stuff??¿☆){Byyyyy the way, 54 out of 56 were Evangelical Christians>>
>Sry if that ruffs your feathers}…….
Have a Blessed evening^*…
Naw, Ken. I’ve long known that the “Founding Fathers” were opportunistic hypocrites. — YUR
Unc, I think his comment was particularly about slavery.
If I have the right man, it’s Robert G Ingersoll, an abolitionist, atheist, and agnostic.
He recruited and commanded a Union Army regiment during the Civil War.
In those days, atheism and agnosticism wouldn’t get him very far in elective politics. The highest he got was state attorney general.
They could tolerate a “sinner” but you still had to be a “believer”.
UR,
Yes, they did have faults and some tended to
be opportunistic but what a great country (far from perfect) they left us!!^…….
As a matter of fact, I would like to take you to
Yemen or Iraq for a comparison Mr. UR…two of my rather forgettable journeys●in ♤s
Forever Ken…….
That’s the guy, lwc! Although, you’re either an agnostic or an atheist, not and. Most – religious? – people kind of lump them all together. They’re similar, but different. Even today there is a tremendous bias against both groups, and to me that is very sad. But, human nature being what it is – still fairly tribal, and not really all that evolved – that is just not going to change much in the near future.
But, I think you’re probably correct about Ingersoll’s quote being directed at slavery. His father was an abolitionist, and even though he broke from his father, he did *inherit* some of his better traits.

I know, Ken. And, I don’t think it is fair – at all – to try to apply today’s values and “sensitivities” to the actions of those who came before us. People who do so show a lack of tolerance. But, as someone who has always been a fan of history in general, I’ve come to realize that it is THE most subjective of academic disciplines. You’ve no doubt heard about it being “written by the victors”, well that involves a healthy amount of touting the virtues – real and imagined – of our side, while demonizing the opposition’s. It is not exactly fair, while also not being exactly true.
But, do us all a big favor, Ken, and check your “America, love it or leave it!” rhetoric at the door. Because yer uncle doesn’t take kindly to jingoism.

UR,
Don’t fret UR, I went a little over the top as do

If one goes over, let’s say a month, of the replys

differences of opinions…….let’s go team; Strike
