Jesse Owens: 7 Lesser Known Things About Once The Fastest Man On Earth

Find the good.  It’s all around you.  Find it, showcase it and you’ll start believing in it.”   —   Jesse Owens

(Boy, it’s hard to find a more inspiring story than Jesse’s!  He had to put up with the segregationism of the United States, that treated blacks like second class citizens.  At least in Germany – despite it being Hitler’s “Master Race” Germany – he was allowed to travel with, and stay at the same hotels as, the white American athletes.  And, the predominantly German crowd gave him thunderous ovations.  Jesse even received a salute from Hitler, as he passed by Hitler’s box.  When Jesse Owens returned to the states he did NOT receive an invitation to the White House.  Nor did Roosevelt send him any message of congratulations!  And, they wouldn’t even let him use the front door of the Waldorf Astoria.  He had to use a service entrance, and a freight elevator, to get to get to his reception.  What a crock!  Things still need improving today, but they’re a heck of a lot better than in those days.  Be well and do good, friends.  Find the good!)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  Gutzon Borglum’s ability to create unique sculptures allowed him to – – –

Gutzon Borglum Bust at Abraham Lincoln's Tomb

Answer:  CARVE A NICHE

(Ooh!  A fancy, stinky pun!  Sacré bleu, le odeur!  Ya gotta love it.  So much of our English language is borrowed from the French.  I guess we can thank William the Conqueror for that.  He was also known as William the Bastard – for pretty obvious reasons – and there were many times that he lived up to that sobriquet.  Take his wife, Matilda.  “She not only refused – to accept William’s proposal – but went to the extent of saying that she was too high born to consider marrying a bastard. Legend says that William rode to her place, dragged her off her horse by her long braids, threw her down in front of her attendants and rode off. Matilda responded by saying she would marry no one but William.”  Reminds me of Rhett Butler, carrying Scarlett O’Hara up the stairs, kicking and clawing!  The #MeToo movement would be appalled!  Historically, there have always been women who crave the “bad boys”.  Anyway, Bill and Tilly were married for over 30 years!  Pretty impressive, for the Dark Ages.   When Tilly died Bill went into a deep depression.  The more you know!

No new clue words today.  However, all of the jumbles are coming up as new.  I got them all immediately this morning.  The answer letter layout was an impressive eleven letter jumble.  It didn’t give anything away, but the final answer came to me right away.

Great cartoon of an Art Appreciation class.  Borglum is best known for Mount Rushmore, but he also created Stone Mountain in Georgia, and a number of works of Abraham Lincoln.  He is arguably America’s greatest sculptor.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
