Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan dies at age 80

Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”   —   Kofi Annan

(It’s hard to “know” people of this stature, but the former Secretary-General of the United Nations always struck me as being very decent and dignified.  He encountered a fair amount of criticism over the years, but I’ve always viewed the U.N. as a fairly ineffective, puppet organization, that kowtows to the will of the United States anyway.  In theory it’s a wonderful thing, but unfortunately not in true application.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I’ll give you that Kofi Annan stood out among UN Secretary Generals.

He’s one of the few I can remember, along with U Thant, and possibly the one just previous, Ban Ki-moon.

It probably helps that he’s from Ghana, one of the few perennially stable counties in Africa.

I also think it’s the job itself, Uncle. If you’re well prepared and have an inner inclination to what it requires, it’ll shape you into a better-rounded human being. I think for instance that if Carter hadn’t become U.S. president, he’d have been a U.N. secretary-general.

Interesting theory, Wes. I’ve always been a big fan of Jimmy’s. The powers that be definitely did not like that outsider! — YUR

Could be, lwc. Hey! Don’t forget dear ol’ Dag Hammarskjold. There are theories that the U.S. and British intelligence may have been involved in his death. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just too autonomous for their liking. — YUR
