Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do.  There can be no courage unless you’re scared.”   —   Eddie Rickenbacker

(We had this exact quote, eleven years ago today, on 05/31/09, which just so happened to be a Sunday!  Is Rebecca testing us?  Hmm.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 05/31/20

Pete Flynn, legendary Mets groundskeeper who started working with ...

Visual Description:  Dealing with weed was a chronic problem!

LAIHEN  =  INHALE,  CSTIEB  =  BISECT,  VERORF  =  FERVOR,  SANDHI  =  DANISH,  TEMELT  =  METTLE,  XFERPI  =  PREFIX   —   Giving us:  IHSEFERDNITLEPIX

Clue/Question:  The soccer stadium’s groundskeeper was an – – –

Pre-Answer:  Four Words  (6-letters) (2-letters) (3-letters) (5-letters)

Groundskeeper Willie Leak has been tending to RFK Stadium for 50 ...

Answer:  EXPERT IN HIS FIELD

(And, his assistant was outstanding in his field!  There are scads of puns in the sphere of fields.  It’s really a wide range.  Hey!  Do you kids think Zonker Harris would make a good groundskeeper, or greenskeeper?  He knows a thing or two about grass and weed, ya know?

Just yesterday, I received an updated version of the world famous ralis95 clue word database!  Despite that, or maybe just coincidentally, we appear to have two brand new clue words today, in “danish” and “mettle”.  Danish actually seems vaguely familiar to me.  Can our diligent research readers confirm, or deny, my suspicion?  We’ve seen the jumble “laihen” sometime in the past, but the other five jumbles came up as new for me.  It took me a few seconds to put together “bisect”.  The answer letter layout was an impressive sixteen letter jumble.  For about two seconds, I was a little intimidated by it.  But, I knew that the final answer started with a vowel, which helped me to see EXPERT.  The rest fell right into place.

Fine stadium cartoon.  The expert really gets right down into it.  Hopefully, we’ll be seeing some sporting events real soon.  I can’t get too jazzed for NASCAR, Korean baseball, or German league soccer.  I need me some MLB!  Be well, stay safe and do good, folks.)   —   YUR

Dog Park Etiquette Tips

Visual Description:  Scurrilous curs?

KLUSL  =  SKULL,  WEKAA  =  AWAKE,  LIFTLE  =  FILLET,  WCRUEF  =  CURFEW   —   Giving us:  SLLAEFEFE

Clue/Question:  The dog was having a problem with small insects and wished he could – – –

Dog Park Tails - Life in the Finger Lakes

Answer:  FLEE THE FLEAS

(What the F?  Those F’n fleas!  They hang on with their teeth ya know.  You can’t outrun sumpin that’s hangin’ on by their teeth.  Nope.  You’re gonna need a good de-lousing!  Then a nice new flea collar.

No new clue words, folks.  A couple of the jumbles looks to be new, but we’ve definitely seen both “klusl” and “liftle” sometime in the past.  A very fine nine letter answer letter layout jumble.  Nothing given away.

Good doggy cartoon.  Look how well the pooches are social distancing!  Wish I could say the same for the owners.  Tsk, tsk!  Some people!  Be well and do good, friends.  Stay safe and healthy.)   —   YUR

A little sincerity is a dangerous thing and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.”   —   Oscar Wilde

(He was probably the most unpretentious person of his day and age.  The “higher morals” of the Victorian Era didn’t exactly jibe with his lifestyle.  But, by some of today’s . . . standards? . . . he might even be considered . . . boring.  The times they are ever a changin’, kiddies!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jeff Tweedy’s Family Stars in Must-Watch, Lockdown-Era Instagram Live Series ‘The Tweedy Show’

Visual Description:  The WARM welcome.

PLEEO  =  ELOPE,  NHPCU  =  PUNCH,  PODYOR  =  DROOPY,  KMEERA  =  REMAKE   —   Giving us:  EPEUHDRPRKE

Clue/Question:  The smell of coffee brewing always – – –

How to Make Stovetop Percolator Coffee

Answer:  PERKED HER UP

(I’ve said it many times before, coffee puns are never stinky.  They are aromatic!  Even before I ever had my first sip of coffee I enjoyed its smell.  But, the even better aroma is the ground coffee itself!  Whether fresh, or right out of the can/packet, that smell is hard to beat.

I was a little surprised, but it appears that we have a new clue word today, in “remake”.  I’m not seeing it on my January version of the ralis95 clue word database.  Temps are back to normal there, so he should be in a chipper mood.  But, in Siberia they’re seeing temps over 80°F, when it should be no warmer than 59°!  The advancement of Global warming in Russia is over twice that as the global average.  Say goodbye to the permafrost over there, and say hello to another increase in carbon dioxide!  They’re also sure to see more wildfires this summer, due to the increased temps.  Beside burning forests, the uncovered – formerly – permafrost areas, which are rich in carbon, will also burn.  Yes, the ground itself can burn, folks!   Boy, this *global warming hoax* must be the most elaborate hoax of all time!

We’ve seen the jumble “pleeo” sometime before, but the other three are coming up as new.  The answer letter layout was a very cryptic eleven letter jumble.  I went for the low-hanging fruit, and got UP first.  I wasn’t initially going past tense, but I did get there.

Jeff just loves promoting his favorite band, WILCO.  Not sure if this is supposed to be Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Tweedy, or just a couple of fans.  But, Jeff Tweedy’s family is doing an Instagram Live series, called “The Tweedy Show”.  If you’re a member of AARP you are prohibited, by law, from watching the show.  Don’t bother checking the TV Guide, Ethel!  You won’t find it.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Should Walt Whitman Be #Cancelled? | JSTOR Daily

I am as bad as the worst, but thank God, I am as good as the best.”   —   Walt Whitman

(Realizing that we all are a mixture of good and bad is both humbling and reassuring.  Not counting the narcissists and sociopaths, of course.  Unfortunately, it appears that these two personality disorders are increasing in modern society.  We just need to recognize them for what they are, before we go electing them to public office.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Servicing eTool | Drilling - Kick ...

Visual Description:  Earth rapists.

NIYCC  =  CYNIC,  WYOLL  =  LOWLY,  VLAREG  =  GRAVEL,  HELODB  =  BEHOLD   —   Giving us:  NILWGLEOD

Clue/Question:  The company specialized in drilling for water, oil and natural gas and was – – –

Home

Answer:  DOING WELL

(A very masculine, suggestive, stinky pun.  Or, maybe it’s just me.  You guys know how I’m in touch with my feminine, tree-hugging side.  Plus, I’m just getting cranky AF in my old age!  Ask yer kiddies what AF means.

No new clue words today.  ralis95 is hunkered down today, in the air conditioning, sipping whatever damn cocktail he pleases!  It’s 97° where he be, heading to 99!  But, of course it’s a dry heat.  Yeah, right.  When it’s that hot it is just friggin’ hot.  However, all of the jumbles appear to be new.  The answer letter layout is a fine nine letter jumble.  At first, it made me think that the second word might be DOWN.  But, I couldn’t do a thing with ILGLE.

Fine construction themed cartoon.  Is drilling considered construction?  Once you’ve gotten to what you were drilling for you’d have to build the rig.  So, I guess, indirectly, drilling could be considered construction.  Lot’s of stories out there of how nature is benefiting from our pandemic lock-down.  Too bad it’s probably just a temporary respite.  The earth deserves a break.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Planning a Trip to the Grand Canyon: Everything You Need to Know

Visual Description:  Too close for comfort.

BEIAD  =  ABIDE,  SFCOU  =  FOCUS,  LEEAGB  =  BEAGLE,  GDEAAN  =  AGENDA   —   Giving us:  DOEEGN

Clue/Question:  When the kids got too close to the rim of the Grand Canyon, their parents were – – –

The Grand Canyon Skywalk The #Grand #Canyon #Skywalk is a ...

Answer:  SCARED $H!TL3$$  Well, maybe just – – – ON EDGE

(My wife can’t look at some of the hiking photos that my daughter takes!  And, my daughter is almost 29!  With little kids it’s simply a matter of curiosity.  The big ones do it mostly for shock value.  I don’t trust my balance anymore.  For me to get to the rim, I’d have to crawl on my belly, like at a boot camp obstacle course.

No new clue words today, but all of the jumbles appear to be new.  No head scratchers for me today.  Today’s answer letter layout was a concise six letter jumble.  It did the trick though.

The Grand Canyon is a very popular Jumble theme.  Jeff does a fine job of drawing it for the cartoons.  Do they let you walk right up to the rim like that, or is this just artistic license?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
