(Very simple pun today. But, considering what day it is today, a very appropriate Jumble pun. The vast majority of football fans – outside of New England . . . and the front runners – are extremely happy that the Patriots will not be playing today! New blood makes the game more interesting, for me.
All of today’s clue words are already on the ralis95 world famous clue word database. However, all of their jumbles are coming up as new. I got five of them immediately, but “rothco” stumped me for quite a while. For starters, the jumble made me think of the abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko. Sometimes a jumble like that causes my brain to shut down a bit. I even let my daughter try, but she couldn’t get it. After trying in my head, about 20 times, I finally started writing out various combinations. After the eighth I finally saw “cohort”. So, I didn’t have to resort to backing into it today! The answer letter layout was a nicely cryptic fourteen letter jumble, but the whole set up made the answer pretty obvious, to me at least.
I don’t know if Jeff expected the Patriots to be in it again, or if this was his way of rubbing it in the faces of Patriot fans. It’s hard to say. I know they plan these out weeks in advance, so who knows. The punter appears to be Jake Bailey. The lineman is probably Shaq Mason, and the guy with the headset, clipboard, and hoodie has to be Bill Belichick. Out of respect for our Patriots fan readers I refrained from using his not so endearing nickname. Great cartoon. Hopefully, it will be a close competitive game today. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

I was waiting to see if today’s Jumble would refer to the Super Bowl or Groundhog’s Day. Today is also Palindrome Day. Found this observation online: At just after 2 a.m., it was 02:02:20 on 02/02/2020. Got me to wonder if the final solution to a Jumble was ever a palindrome. Seems it would be very difficult.
