(A stinker of a pun.  But, also one that threw me for a bit.  It shouldn’t have, but it did.  I’ll explain how in the paragraph below.

There are no new clue words today.  But, all of the jumbles appear to be so.  The only one that I didn’t get immediately was “crounc”.  It took me a couple of looks to see “concur”.  The answer letter layout was a fine nine letter jumble.  Because I wasn’t picking up on any kind of adage, or maxim, I wasn’t seeing the pun.  I even first went with HUMAN, but the AREC only registered as CARE in my addled mind!  HUMAN CARE fit, but made no sense.  So, then I went with CHARM/MARCH, but couldn’t do anything with AENU.  Then I tried REACH, but that left me with AMNU!  Finally, the bad pun sunk in!  This is the second day this week where I’ve misinterpreted some of the answer letters.  Wednesday was  THING for NIGHT, and now today I misread CARE when it was RACE.  I must be losing it, folks.

Cool cartoon of some Athenian official proclaiming the honorific.  Turns out “P” ran a heck of a lot further than Marathon to Athens.  The dude was a professional runner/courier, who was dispatched from Marathon to Sparta, to get reinforcements in fighting the Persians.  That’s 240 + km, or over 150 miles, that he did in two days.  Then he had to run back to Marathon!  Running 300 miles in four, or so, days is what took its toll on him.  The 26 miles from Marathon to Athens would have been like a Walk In The Park if he hadn’t spent himself on those earlier runs.  After winning the big battle against the Persians you’d think one of the generals could’ve spared a horse!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

When I saw the clothing and the agora, I first thought GREEK RACE, but obviously the letters for GREEK weren’t there … Just as bad a pun as HUMAN RACE!

A poser for me as well. I almost gave up on it, because I didn’t feel I was getting anywhere. I spent five minutes mostly trying to find a five-letter word that made some sense, without success; I did not see HUMAN. Switched to the four-letter word and after a couple minutes more finally stumbled into RACE, and then got HUMAN right away from the remaining letters. I don’t know why RACE didn’t occur to me from the cartoon, but it didn’t. I kept looking for more of a Greek angle since the cartoon and clue pounded that pretty hard, plus the history of marathons.

    Good one guys! Nice toughie.

Going back to the 1/9 post and the Calvin and Hobbes link, I saw it in one of the (currently) 4 newspapers I get online and/or print. I do got to GoComics daily to read Non Sequitur after the Sunday “@%#! TRUMP” easter egg was revealed. It was dropped by The Syracuse Post Standard and what an uproar THAT caused. Both sides on the subject spoke up. I find it interesting that usually non political cartoon strips are making not-so-subtle references to the current events. I went to the GoComics site to find the LIO strip so I could send the link. Glad you liked that dark humor LIO strip.
